March is National Children’s Nutrition Month and we celebrated by participating in CACFP Week 3/11-3/15. CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program) is a food and nutrition program that helps provide nutritious and delicious meals to the children in our Head Start program and other child care programs across the nation. Check out our McDonough Head Start classroom exploring where food comes from by planting different seeds including carrots, cucumbers, basil, and marigold flowers. Even the Nutrition Services staff from the Minnesota Department of Education stopped by for a visit! #CACFP #CACFPCreditable

Children can achieve their full potential inside and outside the classroom when they receive the proper foundation and nutrition. As we approach the back-to-school season, many food-insecure families already face the challenge of cuts to pandemic-era food benefits, the high cost of food, rent and utilities that already are straining household budgets. Your ongoing support enables the LA Regional #FoodBank and our partners to provide crucial food and nutrition assistance, especially to children in need. I wanted to give a Monday shout out to Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dietitians in Healthcare Communities which recently discussed the complex topic of dating foods to meet survey compliance. A group of experts, one of which shared a great resource that may be helpful to you too: https://lnkd.in/eNvTY7zg . Go to the "Keep Food Safe" tab for more!

🚨🎉 WIN: On April 9th, 2024, the USDA announced a plant-forward update to the foods provided through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, better known as WIC. The updates include the expansion of plant-based yogurts and cheeses, as well as higher flexibility for states to authorize additional plant-based foods as they meet program nutrient specifications. This was the first update to the WIC food packages in 10 years and is a significant win: nearly seven million women, infants, and children – or 53 percent of all babies born in the United States – participate in WIC and rely on the program to meet their daily caloric intake. ⭐ For many reasons, a child may need to receive all, or part of their nutritional needs, via a tube. These client families are affectionately known as ‘tubie families’. ⭐ For tubies, getting the right amount of nutrients looks a little different. Specialised formulas are administered via the tube directly to the stomach or the small intestine. Commercial formulas are regulated by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), and are nutritionally complete (meet evidence-based nutritional values). Your child’s feeding plan is designed to ensure they get the nutrition needed for growth, health and wellbeing. ⭐ Blended tube feeds are an emerging option for our tubie families. The Australasian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AusPEN) defines Blended Tube Feeds as ‘blending foods into liquid to feed through a feeding tube’. Blended feeds require planning and attention to food safety, but this is achievable with the right supports. It also means your child can enjoy family meals. ⭐ This month, the Kids Dig Food team are very lucky to be participating in a professional development session with @linabreikAdvAPD from @tubedietitian who is an amazing advocate for Tubies everywhere. ⭐ If your tubie family is considering a transition to Blended Tube Feeds, please speak with your Dietitian - we’re here to support you! Founder & Health Educator. || I make it easier for parents to nurture healthy habits in their children using health behavioral change models and resources.
How parents can unknowing make child nutrition complex When it comes to feeding babies and nurturing them to enjoy and look forward to meal times, we must ensure we don't make their food complex. Complexity in feeding in terms of handling: is the food easy for the child to handle. Texture: Does the texture make the entire feeding process easy? Serving: is the food served in a way that might overwhelm the baby? What is complex to one baby might be simple to the other. This is why being observant and identifying each baby's feeding persona is very important. When we continuously feed a child in a way that looks complex to them, this might make the child not look forward to mealtime and can find mealtime frustrating. If this pattern continues, it will surely have an impact on the nutritional status of such a child. Simple makes the process easier. #childnutrition#childrenshealth

Our Program team shared this clip of an open conversation with the recipients and users of our nutritional food packets in village in Chandan Block. It feels great to hear from these participants that the food packets are directly helping pregnant & lactating mothers, and other vulnerable groups in not just getting food for their plates but they also recognize the nutritional value and positive effects of the food they are consuming. Conversing directly with the participants in their own language/dialect is very helpful in getting frank views on various things from the end users. In this instance, the Head of the Program team is seen as talking to the villagers in their language. Due to this unfiltered dialog process, our team also received some very constructive comments and suggestions from the participants. For example, participants suggested that we could further enhance the value of the cooked food consumed by mothers by helping them grow vegetables and greens which they could use in preparing the meals. A project for community based #kitchengardens is underway now which will fit into this perfectly. #fieldvisit #feedbackloop #fieldassessment #communityparticipation #nutritionsecurity #communitynutrition

Did you know that in 2023, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits did not cover the cost of a meal in 99 percent of counties? While #SNAP helps more than 42 million Americans buy food for themselves and their families each year, many families receiving SNAP benefits are still facing food insecurity. In this updated #tool from Urban, explore #data by county, or filter by rural-urban continuum codes to see patterns of the maximum SNAP benefit per meal with the county-level average cost of a modestly priced meal.
