Great awards event last night with so many inspirational programs. New this year is our Chairs rising leader award that celebrates rising leaders. Defining your individual leadership style and developing the strengths needed to advance your career is a journey. Last night we celebrated Tyler Tunic who was selected as the winner of the rising leader award. The #natgas industry is ripe with rising leaders like Tyler, finding the right motivation is key to seeing them soar - curiosity, insight, engagement, and determination must be nutured. Giving high potentials the right development opportunities, like participating in-person to form life long relationships is just one manner of ensuring these talented professionals stay in natural gas. ✋I'll take a shot at this, in public, where everyone can see. Ready? "Engineering is a team sport. We should focus on: building trust, removing friction, maintaining guardrails, ensuring team education and training, reducing employee turn-over, measuring financial value delivery, and using fast-feedback loops to maximize customer satisfaction and to help us devote attention to the right areas. If we're appropriately pair programming, collaborating, minimizing administrative time, cross-training, and have a direct line to a shared value delivery between teams, "individual productivity" is really a minimal concern, because the constraints of the system are larger than the performance of any individual contributor. I could give you 4,000 lines of code that could very badly and very expensively do what 4 lines of code could do, and without better ideas you'd probably even pay a lot for those 4,000 lines. Let's focus on the value delivery first."

Hermit crabs are only able to survive (and thrive) if they can find a larger shell to occupy. Turns out they achieve this through something called synchronous vacancy chain. I have been using this as a model in many of my talks as to how we should think about ourselves and our teams. We are here to help each other and this requires shared #vulnerability. While #leadership was once about myopically driving #productivity and using humans as costs to contain in that process, we now realize that #humanpotential, and specifically human #thriving, is essential to performance. As a result, #leadership is about building #organizationalcapacity. We are here to help each other become the next best version of ourselves.
