A Colossal Vision: Saving Critically Endangered Species from Extinction 💚⚡ 🦏 How can we protect the world’s most endangered species? 🐾 Is it possible to ‘de-extinct’ animals and plants once they have disappeared from the wild? 💡 And how can we use cutting-edge technologies to assist in #rewilding? These are the questions that Colossal Biosciences and its sister non-profit the Colossal Foundation seek to answer; the Foundation was launched and joined our Alliance on 1st October. The northern white rhino is the most endangered mammal on Earth – only two individuals (both female) remain – and is seemingly destined for extinction. The Colossal Foundation believes it’s possible to save this species and many others from the brink, restoring their populations to rewild the world. With $50 million in funding, the Colossal Foundation aims to halt the extinction crisis through three core focuses: Saving Today’s at Risk Species, Ensuring Tomorrow’s Biodiversity and R&D for Conservation. The new Amphibian Conservation Action Plan (ACAP) launched today 🐸 This detailed plan outlines strategic actions to safeguard amphibians worldwide. With a focus on protecting natural habitats, mitigating climate change impacts, reducing pollution, controlling invasive species, and combating diseases, every effort is vital for the survival of these species. Conservationists and researchers from all over the world contributed to writing this book. We are extremely proud to have been involved - two of our experts, Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians Benjamin Tapley and our Institute of Zoology’s Veterinary Research Fellow, Andres Valenzuela-Sanchez led on creating whole chapters within and providing images from the field. When we join together, everything is possible. A dedicated team of scientists and conservationists have worked tirelessly to create this plan, but we need your help to make it a reality. Can capitalism save the world? The AMES Foundation that, I am committed to as a Guardian, thinks YES! AMES stands for “Africa’s Most Endangered Species” and was founded in 2020 by a handful of entrepreneurs. By now, more than 200 entrepreneurs are involved with AMES – both financially and through their active support. We are all united in one goal: to make conservation and animal welfare scalable and thereby make a valuable contribution to the preservation (and recovery) of wildlife.   Since 1970, we have lost more than 2/3 of all species worldwide. The greatest enemy of biodiversity is the loss of natural habitat. By 2030, 30% of the global habitat shall be protected – to this end, we will need more than $700bn per year. Donations and states alone won’t be able to achieve this. We need to leverage the power of markets, of capitalism, to attract financing. 🌿 Rising from the Ashes: Reawakening Australia's Rainforests 🌿 Once upon a time, Australia’s rainforests were vast and teeming with life, but today they stand fragile and endangered. At Foundation & Friends, we have been passionately working to preserve these vital ecosystems through the Rainforest Seed Conservation Project. Since 2008, we've been safeguarding the genetic heritage of our rainforests, storing seeds at sub-zero temperatures to ensure their survival against extinction. With the unwavering support of our donors, we’ve expanded our efforts to include living collections and cryopreservation for species that need special care. Our collaboration with the Research Centre for Ecosystem Resilience (ReCER) has been instrumental, allowing us to conduct genetic analyses that maintain diversity and identify resilient individuals. Together, we've equipped laboratories and propelled crucial research forward. Today we launched our "Limelight Rainforest 5K - Race to Identify" Kickstarter campaign! https://lnkd.in/dgma6eVQ Our goal is to register and catalogue 5000 insect taxa in four months, collecting photographic, acoustic, physiological and genetic data. These data will be published in public databases for use by policy makers, conservationists, scientists, and by anyone with a cool question about insects! We hope you will support the work of our taxonomists in the rainforests of the Amazon basin. Supporters will receive a monthly newsletter, biodiversity reports, and swag. Cataloging 5000 taxa of insects is a bold goal that will have a major impact. For comparison, there are less than 7000 known species of mammals known to science. Let's spread awareness of the importance of insect biodiversity. Insects are an unbelievably diverse group that humanity not only depends on for survival, but paradoxically are also our greatest competitors for food. Further, insects interact with every aspect of the terrestrial world, providing insights across taxa. But most importantly for conservation, insects respond rapidly to changes in local environments, making them rapid indicators of the effectiveness of actions made to improve biodiversity - if we want to save our forests, we need to know our insects! 

🌟 Member Spotlight: Marilles Foundation 🌟 We're proud to highlight the incredible work of Marilles Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to making the Balearic Islands a global example of marine conservation. Since its inception in 2017, Marilles has invested an impressive €5 million in over 100 marine conservation projects across the Balearic Islands, funded entirely by private donations. Their efforts are focused on key strategic areas, including the creation of Marine Protected Areas, promoting sustainable fishing practices, monitoring species and habitats, and improving water quality. Every euro they receive is channeled directly into local projects, making a tangible difference in the preservation of our marine environment. Marilles Foundation also plays a crucial role in fostering collaboration at regional and national levels, supporting initiatives like the Balearic Sea Report and the MARE audiovisual contest. Their commitment to marine citizen science is evident through the promotion of Observadores del Mar in the Balearics.
