Observed each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive policies and practices that benefit employees and employers alike. This year's theme is Access and Equity. In an effort to forge truly inclusive workplaces, we often spotlight ‘events’ and ‘dates’ that champion awareness. Yet, the essence of genuine commitment goes beyond these isolated moments. Samantha Renke PGCE emphasises this through a broader, year-round perspective we should all embrace: These milestones, while significant, should serve as reflections of our day-to-day efforts and rallying points for unified action. Disability isn't always something you can see, nor is it a stigma that we should be embarrassed about. As we look back on National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we are reminded of the incredible contributions made by individuals with disabilities. Beyond this month's recognition, Epiq cultivates inclusion through initiatives like Disability Pride Month, Intersectional ERG programming, and our recently launched voluntary self-identification campaign. Our new Self-ID campaign celebrates individual experiences, empowering our team members to openly share and contribute to our inclusive workplace. Creating an inclusive workplace culture, accessibility, and reasonable accommodation are just a few strategies that can be used to create an inclusive and supportive workplace that promotes disability employment and allows all employees to thrive. Above everything, it requires a willingness from top leadership to realize inclusive employment.

As a person with an invisible disability, I believe that it's crucial that companies understand that simply meeting the ADA's minimum standards isn't sufficient. We should aim higher by creating workplaces that not only welcome people with disabilities but actively attract them. By going beyond compliance and embracing inclusivity, employers stand to gain immensely. They can tap into a diverse pool of talent, unique perspectives, and a workforce driven by innovation. Personally, I know the value that individuals with disabilities can bring to the table, and I encourage companies to seize this opportunity to create an environment where everyone's abilities are celebrated. There I was a new intern for a Veteran lobby group waiting to cross at a light and a legislator looked at me and callously asked, “What did you do to yourself?” Disability employment awareness month MATTERS! And we ALL have to work hard to erase #ableism and the stigma that comes with living while #disabled. With the help of community & some amazing mentors that believed in me I have been able to: ✅ Transform landscape of CO State Cap to make it more accessible. ✅ Pass 1st in the nation disability ♿️ rights laws WHILE ALSO passing bills that focus on -Access to Mental Health -Supporting our Veterans -Housing Affordability -Crim Justice Reform -And get millions of $’s in TAX CUTS for our small businesses ✅ Consistently ran one of the BEST campaigns in the state -Raising almost half a million for my elections for a humble State House race. -And a field program 2nd to NONE getting 3 passes on the phones and 2 passes on the doors of a 30k + pursuasion universe -Robust mail program (10-13) -Text program -Even TV commercials ✅ Instituted and established one of the 1st cross disabled pre legislative session conferences AND lobby day (during session) hosted at the CO Cap ALL in the face of ableism & lack of access EVERYWHERE. This is NOT a brag for me.. BUT an example of what a disabled workforce can accomplish IF WE ❌ERASE ABLEISM ❌ERASE STIGMA ✅SECURE BASIC ACCESS If you don’t include disabled people in your workforce, then NOT ONLY ARE YOU DISCRIMINATING BUT YOU’RE MISSING OUT.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), which means spreading awareness that a disability-inclusive workplace is a strong workforce.  In fact, over 40 million Americans report having a disability. Think of the talent and abilities in that population. It's no wonder that companies that proactively employ people with disabilities see stunning results: - Higher retention rates  - Increased employee productivity   - Increased profitability vs. peer companies Join me in championing disability #equity and #inclusion.
