Meet Megan Chavez,MS,FACHE,CPXP, Vice President, Cook Children’s Experience Megan Chavez, protector of the Cook Children’s experience. It’s her job to strengthen trust between those giving and receiving care. That means she spends her days connecting the dots between the delivery of health care and the magic that happens when we see the world through the eyes of others and respond with respect, kindness and generosity. It’s a perfect role for a person whose favorite quote is all about the impact one person can make on another: “To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.” For Chavez, personal success is found in those magical moments of connection, big and small. “It’s when I see our employees caring for each other, either by reaching out when they see someone struggling or taking the initiative to rethink a process and change the way we work for the better,” Chavez said. “Or when I walk the hallways and see evidence in our physical spaces that the experience of our families and staff were front-of-mind when that space was designed. And when I see kids, regardless of disability or life’s challenges, playing and smiling because of our amazing employees giving their all so that a child knows they are loved and safe,” Chavez said. Congrats to Reshma Saujani and her team for a fantastic first Moms First Summit. So many interesting women and great conversations, including one I had with Lynn Martin, Tiffany Dufu and Kathryn Kaminsky, moderated by Maneet Ahuja, on how to succeed as female leaders when our system sets women up to fail. Bottom line: women need access to paid leave, flexible work and affordable childcare. The truth is not all women who have children will want to keep their foot on the gas when it comes to their careers at the same rate the entire time their kids are growing up. We should celebrate and support all women in these highly personal and often complex choices. Real support means creating both off-ramps and on-ramps so women can slow down and re-accelerate their careers again with less friction and stigma. If we reduce the societal pressure on women to perfectly fit only one persona at a time, our corporations and our communities will all thrive. https://lnkd.in/gzecSP3m

Women do it all because we have to, not because we want to. When people talk about women working and raising kids, the question “how do you do it?” inevitably comes up. But the truth is, we do it because we have to. There’s no such thing as a supermom. Instead there are just moms working as hard as they can, and often not managing to do everything equally well. And to be honest, I think this applies to parents in general and not just women. They say it takes a village, and it really does! There are days when I have an amazing day at work - I’ve signed a new client or delivered a project. Then I come home and bedtime goes wrong, I lose my temper and when the kids are eventually in bed I acknowledge half of my day was good. Or there are times when it’s the opposite - work has been stressful but my time with the kids is so much fun. No one can do it all. No one can do it all perfectly, and that’s okay. We need to get comfortable asking for help. Delegating both in our personal and our professional lives without stigma. Whether that’s getting a friend to come over to help mount a shelf for my son’s Xbox or bringing in another team member to cover an aspect of a project. We shouldn’t have to do it all, and to be successful we need to get comfortable with that.

In recognition of Women's History Month, I'd like to address the incessant inquiry I constantly received when I was an expectant mom "Are you still going to work after the baby?" is all too familiar, only intensifying with each subsequent child. I will say, I too am guilty of asking this question to contribute to a conversation. But it's time to retire this question. Regardless of the decision – returning to work or staying at home – moms face unwarranted guilt. Those who continue their careers are burdened with mom guilt for not being present with their children every moment, while stay-at-home moms may grapple with losing their sense of identity and contribution outside the home. It's a lose-lose situation, steeped in societal pressures and expectations. Let's support every mom's decision without judgment or interrogation. Each mother (family) knows what's best for them, considering various factors such as financial stability, emotional well-being, and personal fulfillment. Instead of fixating on work plans, let's offer our support and inquire about how we can assist them. Empowering moms to make their own choices, free from undue scrutiny, is paramount. Let's celebrate Women's History Month by advocating for the removal of barriers that hinder women's progress in all aspects of life. After all, motherhood is challenging enough without the added weight of societal expectations. Agree or disagree?

Let's talk about the realities women face in the workforce: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐲 𝐆𝐚𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠: Women earn anywhere from 12-25% less than men in the same roles. 𝐌𝐮𝐦 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝: Women are advised to not talk about their families and children at work to avoid being stereotyped as less committed or career-focused. This expectation unfairly burdens women and reinforces the idea that motherhood somehow diminishes their professional capabilities. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 "𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐲" 𝐌𝐲𝐭𝐡: DEI and culture club initiatives often land on women's plates, but the credit and compensation for this extra work are scarce. 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 & 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝 (𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐍𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐝): 50 years of data shows that when women enter an industry in large numbers, wages stagnate and the field loses "prestige." Think teaching and nursing. 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐱: Women often score higher on performance reviews, yet promotions take longer to materialize. 𝐌𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐏𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐲: Lack of paid (or even adequate unpaid) maternity leave further disadvantages mothers in the workplace. Women can expect to lose up to a quarter of their lifetime earning potential in the first decade of each child.
