🐾 Hi there, Paddy here! 🐱 Do you munch on seaweeds? If not, I highly recommend adding them to your diet! 🌿 Why? Seaweeds are bursting with minerals and are super alkalizing! 🌊 One reason why Japanese cats live long is because they feast on lots of seaweeds! 🇯🇵 Yoshiko adores seaweeds and nibbles on various types daily, but Nori is her absolute fave! 🍣 Here in Australia, more and more people are snacking on nori, and Nori roll shops are popping up everywhere! But watch out, not all Nori is good. Even if the package has Japanese writing, most are not a product of Japan. Why's that a problem? Yoshiko accidentally bought non-Japanese Nori once, and it tasted awful, like chemicals! She even found green powder on it. Yuck! She wonders what it was... ink powder, maybe? Who knows! 🙀 Yoshiko tried to feed me good quality nori, but I just don’t like it! 🐟 How about you? Do you enjoy Nori? 🍙

The Chinese word for "Avocado" literally translates to "Butter-fruit". 牛油果 Niúyóu (butter) + guǒ (fruit) And the word for "Butter" literally translates as "Cow Oil". 牛油 Niú (cow) + yóu (oil) Chinese prefers to create new words by combining existing characters (there's enough characters to learn already). The results are quite logical, memorable and ever so amusing to us non-native speakers. So in Chinese avocado is a "fruit that tastes like the oil that cows make": 牛 + 油 + 果 = niú-yóu-guǒ = cow-oil-fruit. Easy to remember right? Perhaps you'll also remember the words for cow, oil and fruit after this. Turning a piece of information into a small story like this is known as a "mnemonic device", which helps with information retention, ast the human mind takes more easily to stories than it does to rote memorization. P.S. Vamos #Chile !

The "how" comes back to the magical microorganism kōji, but not the one normally used in sake. 🍶⠀⠀⠀ There are three main varieties of kōji – yellow, white and black – and yellow is the one normally used in sake. White is used to make the traditional Japanese distilled spirit shōchū, and black is used for Okinawan awamori.⠀⠀⠀ 🍶⠀⠀⠀ What's different between the different strains? White kōji produces much more citric acid than the yellow kōji normally used for sake, thereby protecting the fermenting shōchū from contamination in place of the lactic acid used for sake. (More on that later when we look at old starters.)⠀⠀ 🍶⠀⠀⠀ So switching to a different type of kōji is a way for brewers to get more acidity without breaking the very strict legal regulations placed on the list of ingredients for anything calling itself "sake".⠀⠀⠀

Musing on cold remedies this evening as I sip my hot lemon and honey infusion to soothe a scratchy throat. Variations on warm beverages with tea, honey, lemon and ginger seem pretty commonplace as go-to solutions. Soups, too - my grandmother swore by chicken soup for colds ("feed a cold, starve put a fever" she'd say). That and rubbing Vicks vaporub on your feet 🤷♀️. But I've also heard rumours that Russians like to mix raw egg 🥚 into their cold cures, and Spaniards garlic 🧄, the Iranians turnips 🥔 (yes, I think that's a potato. Apparently there's no turnip emoji - who knew!), and the Germans snail syrup (?!) 🐌. So what I want to know is this: 🤔 Are any of those actually true? 👍 Do they actually work (and should I try them 😆)? 🌎And what other weird and wonderful remedies does the world have to offer? Tell me more! Cure me of my ills! #LITranslators #TranslatingThroughSniffles #EverydayMedicineAroundTheWorld #SpreadWordsNotGerms 👋 By the way, if you're new to my LinkedIn posts, hello! As you might have gathered, I do love exploring different cultures and traditions and I even get to share those things with others through my work - I'm a #translator, #proofreader and #editor working from #German, #Swedish and #French into native UK #English. 𝚈𝙰𝙼𝙰𝙶𝙰𝚃𝙰 How can you give complexity to a Pisco Sour using mainly Japanese ingredients sourced in Yamagata prefecture? The "kingdom of fruit," as it is known, inspired this drink, which uses Persimmon, Pear, Watermelon, and melon in only one drink. They are perfectly layered and in symbiosis. Fruitness, acidity, length, mineral notes and creaminess. BarSol Pisco Mosto Verte

Making Vegetable and Rice Tamagoyaki 🇯🇵 🥚 🍚 😋 Let's start a great week! Tamagoyaki is a type of Japanese omelette made by rolling together several layers of fried beaten eggs. It is often prepared in a rectangular omelette pan called a makiyakinabe or tamagoyaki. The word "tamago" means egg in Japanese, and the word "yaki" means to be cooked over direct heat. Interesting: Ice Cream Bean! Inga edulis, known as ice-cream bean, ice-cream-bean, guama or guaba, is a fruit native to South America. It is in the mimosoid tribe of the legume family Fabaceae. It is widely grown, especially by Indigenous Amazonians, for shade, food, timber, medicine, and production of the alcoholic beverage cachiri. It is popular in Peru, Ecuador, Pernambuco-Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana and Colombia. The taxonomic name Inga is derived from its name with the Tupí people of South America (ingá) while the species name edulis is Latin for "edible". The common name "ice-cream bean" alludes to the sweet flavor and smooth texture of the pulp. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eM724-_C https://lnkd.in/e6zpTNcJ
