Does anyone else struggle to find their "Tribe" of nonprofit professionals? I couldn't find the right group, so I created Black Women With Nonprofits. It has been the gift that keeps on giving. Meet Joyce Senior, PhD, PMP, who is a BWWN member. She epitomizes the essence of Black Girl Magic as the co-founder of My Hair My Health PDX .Her passionate dedication lies in establishing safe spaces for Black women and their families, fostering collaborative communities that redefine the trajectory of holistic health and wellness, unfettered by constraints. Although we initially connected via LinkedIn through my nonprofit coaching services, Dr. Joyce and I have cultivated a burgeoning sisterhood that embodies the very magic we acclaim when we say "My Tribe." Further validating the importance of the Black Women With Nonprofits Group. Black Women With Nonprofits is the conduit through which fellow Black women can find their tribe. There is no longer a need to contort ourselves to fit into spaces led by leaders who don't look, speak, or commiserate with our journey as Black founders. BWWN is the space where our voice can resonate authentically. Today we celebrate #BlackPhilanthropyMonth, a time to celebrate the brilliance and imagination that Black folks bring to philanthropy, this month’s theme is “Afro-Futures in Giving” Black women have been on the cutting edge of breaking down the traditional philanthropic paradigm and imagining new futures for Black communities. Dr. Akilah Watkins' thoughtful letter on the end of Black History Month reminded me of The Bridgespan Group's data on Black-led nonprofits: "the unrestricted net assets of the Black-led organizations are 76 percent smaller than their white-led counterparts." According to data from Initiative for Strategic Volunteer Engagement, the majority of #nonprofit #volunteer programs are funded through unrestricted assets. If you put those two facts together, a clear implication emerges: to mobilize volunteers, Black-led organizations need our unrestricted support. They are disproportionately pulling from their core budgets to create these programs. Your individual donations (and corporate matching) provide this fuel. ⭐Nonprofit Spotlight⭐ For Black History Month, we'll be highlighting 3 Black-led and women-founded nonprofits in California that you should check out! 1️⃣ California Black Women's Health Project (CABWHP) a non-profit organization that is solely committed to improving the health of California's 1.2 million Black women and girls through advocacy, education, outreach, and policy. They focus on empowering Black women to take personal responsibility for our own health and to advocate for changes in policies that negatively affect Black women's health status. 2️⃣  LA Black Worker Center  In 2009, LA Black Work Center (LABWC) started as a project at the UCLA Labor Center. Recognized the growing need for robust and centralized spaces where Black workers could connect with each other, build leadership skills, and access resources that help Black workers have greater control over their workplace. In 2023, LA Black Worker Center was honored as one of the CalNonprofits of the Year in the Los Angelos Region. 3️⃣ 3Ls The Academy Based in Oakland CA, 3Ls: The Academy focuses on empowering Education and Youth Development through Literacy, Leadership and Liberation. 3L’s improves literacy rates by serving the entire community, from schools, to families, and students and teachers. In 2015, a groundbreaking study conducted in collaboration between the Greater Omaha Chamber and Urban League of Nebraska, Inc. laid bare the disparities faced by Black Young Professionals in Omaha. The findings revealed a notable discrepancy in satisfaction levels when compared to the broader young professional population, particularly concerning the availability of resources crucial for advancing their careers. Fueled by the urgency of these revelations, our Young Professionals chapter has been unwavering in its commitment to addressing these challenges head-on. Our tireless efforts are grounded in the belief that everyone, regardless of their background, should have equal access to opportunities for personal and professional growth. Through a range of initiatives, from personal and professional development workshops to impactful community service events, our programs aim not only to bridge gaps but to propel all young professionals toward success in Omaha's dynamic workforce.
