Last Friday we celebrated the awards. Today, we celebrated the people behind the awards. A grand haul of 18 wins. 7 Gold, 4 Silver, 6 Bronze and 1 Grand Prix! Whilst holding bragging rights for ‘effectiveness’, we are beyond ecstatic to also be crowned as most ‘creative’ at the recent 4As Advertising Festival. We are in a business of ideas and people. And thus, these awards are a culmination in the strong conviction of belief in our ideas and pushing to sell through to the client. We salute the 4As for a brilliantly organized and concluded festival, our clients who believe in us, and the team that rallies together - rain or shine - to bring it all to fruition. Bravo to The New York Times for rightly calling the modern day #Oscars campaigns a "Blood Sport" 🩸. Like any other business, the movie business is also a business, and the marketing campaigns are increasingly, and visibly getting more cut-throat. While most think of it as a glitzy glam affair, having been in fashion weeks, film festivals, and the pre-parties aplenty, it truly is a sport that is more campaigning and marketing, than it is a meritocracy. Here's why. 🏆 Oscar Campaign Dynamics: There's a lot that goes on in the #BTS world of Oscar campaigns, which often involve significant budgets, aim to shape narratives, gain momentum, and secure nominations and wins during awards season. 🏆 Streaming Platforms and Campaign Spending: The entry of streaming platforms into the awards arena has significantly increased campaign spending. Netflix, in particular, has been known to allocate substantial budgets for Oscar campaigns, sometimes exceeding the production budgets of the films themselves! 🏆 Harvey Weinstein's Influence: The modern playbook for Oscar campaigns was developed by #HarveyWeinstein at Miramax in the late '80s and early '90s. #Weinstein's aggressive tactics, including sending VHS screeners and relentless lobbying, revolutionized the awards season game and are still used by top agents today. 🏆 Academy Regulations: The Academy has thus introduced regulations over the years to address campaigning tactics, responding to strategies pioneered by Harvey Weinstein. The rules include restrictions on direct outreach, approved mailing houses, and limitations on food and beverage during campaign events. Although negative campaigning is considered less prevalent today than it was before, it still plays a role in shaping public perception. 🏆 Calls for Reform: Some suggest a return to more restrained #marketing campaigns, reminiscent of the pre-Miramax era, while others argue against spending caps due to potential negative impacts on various entities benefiting from awards business. 🏆 Impact on the Movie Business: Despite the controversies, incidents can lead to increased visibility and viewership for the films involved. Which brings virality to the forefront, and why it actually might not be the best. I'm always on the fence between the art and commerce of this. "Prioritize the relationship over the result." - Alex Hormozi 📣 Story Time 📣 I get dozens of content creators reaching out to me every single week wanting to work with us at Station Entertainment. Many of them are not in a place where sponsorships make sense, but over the past 6+ months I have made a conscious decision to meet with as many of these creators as possible to provide them with knowledge, support, a network, and more than anything.. I want to be a resource for these amazing creators who are working tirelessly to grow their businesses. I have zero expectations from these conversations. I just want to pass along as much good as possible to this amazing community. Well this week something cool happened. A creator reached back out to me who I had previously met with over 6 months ago. In truth, I had not been following her channel's growth, but over the past several months.. she has been working hard to grow her audience and engagement. In our follow-up call this week, she mentioned that she has been self-manifesting in her journal every day since our initial meeting.. that when the opportunity came, she wanted to work with Station Entertainment. She signed with us today as our newest client! I am thrilled to work with her going forward, but I am also convinced that relationships matter. What if he got the chance to do it again? I never laughed so much as when I saw Jo Koy in concert last year. He OWNED the Moda Center in Portland, a crowd of nearly 20,000 doubled over and crying with laughter. He worked the crowd and ad-libbed effortlessly, so much so that I wondered if he even had set material, or if he just going to riff the entire time. So what didn't translate to the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel? - An uninvested crowd - Lack of preparation (he got hired 10 days prior) - Incredibly ambitious (ahem, unrealistic) expectations When I counsel creatives on how to promote their work, we start with establishing an understanding their work environment, their target audience, and their ideal creative process. But what most creatives get that Jo never got, is the freedom and time to experiment, which is where true creativity is born. The ability to try and fail privately at first, and then increase the circles of awareness over time. The fact of the matter is that Jo Koy had months to perfect his seemingly relaxed crowd work before ever stepping on a tour bus. He tested jokes on his comedian friends, his team, then small clubs, then larger rooms, and so on. He never got that chance with the Globes. Hosting the Golden Globes, or any awards show really, is like being an archery champion who gets hired to play a game of lawn darts and is expected to get a perfect score the first round. We owe Jo Koy, like all creatives, the chance to try and fail, experiment and play, and the TIME it takes to adjust, fine tune, and try again. It’s pretty certain that Golden Globes will never ask him to host again, but what if they did? What if they asked him to start prepping for 2025? I bet he’d crush. And job number one? Recently I spoke with Ad Age about all the news, drama, and big takeaways from Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. We all know the weeks after the Festival are the beginning of our New Year. Everyone’s fired up, talking about inspiration, determined to have brave conversations, motivated by being pissed off at not winning a Lion, pouring through copious trend wrap-ups, promising to do work that makes a difference. Then we bring on the ‘big idea’ meetings, the how we win action plans, the hack sessions, the unpack the work workshops. Now, I'm not mad about this. This is a very good thing. We all need this kick in the arse to power us forward BUT... I would stress one big thing as we take our New Year's vigor to the table. Let's save the business before trying to save the world. This year, we saw a healthy body of work awarded Lions that used the power of creativity to transform businesses - AND people's lives, communities, and maybe even the planet. Work where the purpose was real, demonstrated at scale, and delivered tangible outcomes for both business and cause. We finally, hopefully, have gotten over being completely drunk on ‘purpose', and awarding advertisers with Lions simply for paying lip service to causes and social well-being.
