USA, Brazil, Uruguay, Guinea, and even… Fiji! A few months ago we announced the #YourGamedevStory competition. The idea was to give back to the industry, give a $10k grant to one selected studio, and provide marketing support covering the APAC region. So far we received 139 total submissions out of 47 countries. In the next weeks, we will be sharing some of their stories. 💬 "The one true inspiration that gives me the strength to build games today is the satisfaction of seeing people experience genuine wonder and fun while playing what I crafted for them." We are sure he has plenty of inspiration after seeing what the studio accomplished with the Desktop Explorer - allowing you to solve puzzles in an interactive ’90s desktop experience. 💬 "After 2 years of honing a diverse game dev skillset in a small company, I embarked into the uncharted territory of developing the game solo. This part of the road was rich in freedom, creativity, and wonder, but it quickly evolved into an endeavor I could no longer face alone. It was when I started assembling a party to join me. Mobile games generated about $89.6 billion in revenue in 2021 across both iOS and Google Play. Very very very little of this originated from Africa as a whole. It was so little I have found a hard time finding the exact or rounded numbers. There are many people building awesome games in Africa but the revenue side of the equation is not equating, X is yet to be found. (Not Elon's) The answer might lay in UX design. How do we connect mobile games to real world experiences and people's day to day lives in Africa so that they can find value enough to pay for it. This has been done before by games such as Pokemon Go that have managed to intertwine virtual realities with real world experiences, we would only be customizing such experiences but for an African audience. In Africa virtual goodies don't cut it, the prize must be financially or physically rewarding/tangible. In today's case study, we look at solving for the fun problems in Africa, how to merge games with real world experiences, how to market these experiences, provide value and in turn generate the elusive mobile game revenue.
