Happy International Women's day to all women in the mining industry! 👯♀️ And what a fitting week it's been discussing with many women about their achievements in the workplace. In one conversation, my candidate had increased the female workforce from 5 to 15% since working with her company!!! 📈 Encouraging and motivating women to achieve more in a male dominated industry is now the new normal. I hope things continue to look up and up for women not only in mining but across the world 🗺 #iwd2024 #womensday2024 #women #womenempowerment #miningindustry #mining #miningcareers #miningnews

June 15th is International Day for Women in Mining (IDWIM), a global day to celebrate the achievements of women in mining while raising awareness of the need for gender equality action in the mining sector. IDWIM’s 2024 theme is “I am Mining and I Belong”. It carries a powerful message of inclusion, empowerment, claiming space, and advocating for positive change within an industry undergoing transformation. As the mining sector evolves, this phrase serves as a powerful reminder of the diverse individuals who contribute to it and the importance of creating a more inclusive and sustainable future for all. As an Indigenous owned, heavy construction company working in the mineral exploration, mine development and mining sector, IDWIM resonates deeply for TNDC. It doubles-down our commitment to carving out pathways for women, particularly Tahltan women, providing them with the tools, training and opportunities to grow, develop and ascend within our ranks. This day reinforces our commitment to transforming the mining industry – a field where women have historically been underrepresented. Women continue to make up only 15.9% of the BC Mining workforce and 14% of the Canadian mining workforce (Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) 2024). TNDC has superseded the industry average with 41% of our workforce being female. Our dedication goes beyond mere statistics; it is about fostering a workplace culture that thrives on safety, respect, equality, equity and inclusivity for our female employees. By championing these values, TNDC aims not only to contribute to a more gender-balanced world but also to inspire change within the mining sector and beyond. We are committed to leading by example, demonstrating the powerful impact of equity, inclusion and diversity in driving innovation and success. Our Tahltan HEO Training Program, with its 100% female participation this year, and our Employee HEO Training Program, highlight our dedication to providing the tools, training and opportunities for women, particularly Tahltan women, to thrive and lead. Today, we celebrate the incredible achievements and contributions of women worldwide. From breaking barriers to shattering glass ceilings, women have been catalysts for change in every industry, including mining. Having worked in the mining Industry for over 3 years now; I’ve seen women trail-blaze, defy stereotypes and redefine what it means to thrive in a traditionally male-dominated field. Their resilience, determination, and unwavering commitment have not only driven progress but have also paved the way for greater diversity and inclusion. On this special day, let's recognize and honor the diversity of women in mining – from geologists and engineers to miners, artisans, operators and executives. Back in mid-2022, directly to my face I had a work colleague say to me immediately after a management meeting I had attended that Gender Equity was “discrimination against men” All I was endeavouring to to do at that specific meeting was to get the topic of Diversity put onto the monthly meeting agenda to start the conversation. There really had been no conversation relating to how male dominated the organisation was and that there really hadn’t been any corporate focus on this for around 10 years. In May 2022, I was successful with this push to have Diversity discussed at our monthly management team meetings, but interestingly enough, when I had to step away from my role at Main Roads Western Australia some 6 months later due to over-exposure to psychosocial hazards, my Director removed this item off the agenda. I was the only female senior manager on that management team, so maybe he thought that because I no longer attended, and with an all male management team, there was no longer a need to have the discussion. Take a look at the commentary and attitudes of other former colleagues of mine have.. they very much align with this FinReview article. If a Government of Western Australia agency can’t understand the importance of gender equity and can’t lead best practice in this area, then really, how can they ask everyone else to do this. Not supporting those who try to work for change, not acknowledging or addressing concerns when they are raised with management means there really is systemic issues preventing change..

Mining’s push for gender diversity threatened by ‘Andrew Tate’ effect A belief that women are being promoted based on gender, rather than ability, has permeated to middle management and boardroom level, according to some female leaders. Deshnee Naidoo has spent her career climbing the ladder in mining and feels the mindset change towards women has been “phenomenal”. But lately, the former head of Vale Base Metals, a nickel and cobalt producer, has noticed a worrying backlash. When candidates from diverse backgrounds secure jobs, some men in the industry have started using the acronym DEI — diversity, equity and inclusion — in a derogatory reframing: “Didn’t Earn It.” https://lnkd.in/ghyM6AgK

On 18 June 2024, Marampa Mines Limited (MML) joined the global community in observing International Day of Women in Mining, an annual global campaign that honours the incredible achievements of women and their advancement and inclusion in mining. We collectively and individually celebrated MML’s continuous commitment toward diversity and gender parity. We hosted engaging activities, including a panel discussion on the theme “I am Mining and I Belong,” where colleagues shared personal stories to inspire others. The day was filled with fun, recognition of outstanding women, cultural dance displays, and a live art station with images depicting the roles and positions of women in the mining industry today. Towards the end of 2023, MML surpassed its 30% target for female representation among direct employees, reaching 34%, a remarkable milestone. This commitment to a minimum 30% female headcount also extended to our contractors. Continuing to develop women at all levels in our workforce underpins our determination to prioritise diversity, equality and building a strong workforce in an industry where a more diverse range of perspectives and skills can contribute to raising productivity, innovation, safety, resilience and making a positive impact. Thank you to everyone who participated and made this day unforgettable. MML is determined to continue leading the way in championing diversity and inclusion in mining. #womeninmining #IDWIM2024 #diversity #communities #womeninmetals #ironore #MarampaBlue #metalsmerchant
