🎉 Day of the Dead in Mexico is a unique celebration with historical roots in ancient Aztec traditions. It differs from Halloween as it's a commemorative festival rather than one to scare off spirits. The celebrations extend from November 1 to November 2, and traditions include building altars (ofrendas) with offerings for the deceased, sugar skulls, catrinas, calacas/calaveras (skeleton figures), Pan de Muerto, marigolds, and papel picado. 🏵️💀🍞 🎈 Mexico City's Day of the Dead parade, made famous by a James Bond film, is a more recent addition to the festivities, offering a grand spectacle with massive floats and thousands of attendees. One of the most remarkable aspects of Palermo is the theatricality of its buildings, crossroads, and even its historic beach (in the pictures you see the antica focacceria San Francesco, the inimitable Quattro Canti, and the bathing establishment of Mondello).   Windows are living elements, implying hidden eyes and backing the piazza as the skene (wall) of an ancient Greek theatre. Palace facades present a telling scenography, with statues, dedications, memories, and stories. The framing of the beach just opens wide the eyes and begs visitors to be alert, to not let the beauty of the surrounding landscape pass unnoticed.   Staging, framing, and enacting. These planning actions make the city visible, turning its life into an over occurring drama, and setting in motion a perennial dynamism of recognition and discovery. In the Christian tradition, November 2 is a feast day that honors all the souls that have departed from this earth. Those who finished their journey, who continued to remind us that our life has a destination or an end point. Whether a departing gate or just a final arrival, the limit of time is a condition to live life intensely without wasting it (which is the reason why Saint Francis called death “sister”). In walking through cemeteries - a religious and secular tradition that is very rooted in Italy – people then not only traverse the cities of the past, connecting to the stories that preceded us (we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, Bernard of Chartres used to say), but also find inspiration to see our own time as a treasure and our own life as an adventurous pursuit of meaningful value.   Of all the memorable tombs in Italian cemeteries, my absolute favorite is that of Davide Campari, in the Monumental Cemetery of Milan, which features a sculpture of Christ’s Last Supper. The tomb is a homage to Leonardo’s masterpiece, not far from the cemetery, but I also like to see it as a way to participate in that dinner forever. Maybe as the person in charge of the aperitivo. Here are some of the most amazing custom-made #pianos by Fazioli. My absolute favorite – on my ideal wish list of course… – is the Marco Polo, a red F308 celebrating the ties of Venice and China, or nearby Sacile and the Chinese commissioning client, by its reference to the Venetian explorer who opened the silk route, and the reproduction of a Canaletto canvas inside the lid.   What is truly remarkable about the Fazioli approach to manufacture is not only the founder’s idea of the #piano as an object of technical and aesthetic evolution, but also the company’s philosophy: to produce individual, high achieving pianos for performers, endowed with a unique personality and sound. In search of one of Sicily’s most hidden gems? Look no further than the city of Syracuse. This weekend I read Tara Isabella Burton’s article from the Wall Street Journal, highlighting the unique beauty and rich history of the Sicilian City. Each year, the beachside town hosts a theater festival, featuring ancient plays with an Italian flair. The entire city makes its visitors feel as if they are to be transported back in time at any minute. It is only an hour from the Catania airport, yet very few are aware of the beautiful sights and delicious restaurants with fresh ingredients found within the city itself. Small cities throughout Italy provide travelers with an intimate connection to the history, culture, and traditions that are uniquely found in them. Burton boasts that travelers to Italy can find all they are looking for in Italy in the “small infinitely walkable space” of Syracuse. While major cities are important when traveling to a new country, especially Italy, it is often these smaller cities, like Syracuse, that travelers leave feeling the most connected to. There is a friendly, close knit, feel that comes with visiting small cities where travelers are often welcomed with open arms as if they were on of the city’s own.
