“Making mental well-being a priority” is the vital topic General Counsel Sustainability Forum member, Fiona Scattergood will discuss at the GC Summit. For me, brand activism means using your position, power and influence as an organisation to create change in society. It should never be just a marketing strategy, where your voice just creates more noise, it’s an opportunity to add value and give something back. Should businesses engage in social and environmental issues? Yes, I believe all businesses have a responsibility to engage in social and environmental issues, both ethically and from a business perspective - they need to have cultural fluency and be able to adapt to societal changes to remain relevant.

A late (and blurry) appreciation post for Purposefest 2024 by The Crowd. I've never been to a conference in a beer garden before, but I definitely would again! It created an atmosphere of relaxed and candid exchange which is a great contrast to the restrained nature of most sustainability events. A couple of points worth sharing: 🟡 How do we enable the changemakers within companies to manage the reporting burden and still have enough energy to drive real change within their organisations? We discussed the importance of proving the relationships between metrics and impact, and boiling it all down to one or two metrics which encapsulate the change that people want to drive internally. 🟡 More 'centrist' communications around polarising issues land better across the opinion spectrum! This research by Revolt will be helpful for firms looking to carefully navigate thorny issues - I just hope that it doesn't encourage a lack of boldness in those firms which are better positioned to take a stand on key issues. All in, a great day made even better by good conversation with Rishi Madlani, Pendragon Stuart, Karen Hamilton, Dominic White, and many others. Thank you all for your time! Through this lies immense opportunity though. The Utopian Landscape of embedding and integrating sustainability right through an organisation requires a robust foundation of knowledge in other people who’s titles don’t include sustainability and the supporting practices they undertake daily. How to do this? Engagement, educating and enabling others is part science and part art, and how this occurs will always differ across organisations and cultures. Underneath this lies principles of trust, surrender and humility - we cannot do the change we seek alone, and inviting others to help is a necessity, not an option. We had the most incredible time hosting our very first What's Working panel last week. We had the pleasure of being joined by Redroaster | Certifed BCorp, Bird & Blend Tea Co. and Ridgeview Wine Estate. As the panel fell within B Corp month, and as we ourselves have only recently certified, we thought it would be a great opportunity to learn from some incredible local businesses who are playing a key part in the better business movement. We found our panelists contributions invaluable, and wanted to share some key takeaways which really resonated with us: ⚡ Don't be afraid to set yourself a big goal - you'll be surprised at what you can achieve when you set your sights high and how much support you'll receive when you proudly tell others what you're aiming to do. 💡 Cultivating innovative and unconventional approaches is essential in developing sustainability initiatives - don't underestimate how important it is to foster collaboration among stakeholders from various sectors, including government and academia. 🤝 If certain aspects of sustainability management seem overwhelming, explore partnership opportunities with external partners. Whether it's sourcing eco-friendly packaging materials, waste management solutions, or implementing efficient measurement systems, there are so many businesses who can help you. 💬 As you embark on your sustainability journey, connect with peers who share similar aspirations or have already made progress.
