We recently attended Skills4Startups® (S4S) - Britain's First Mobile Business School Festival 4 Startups at Google Cloud’s new Innovation Hub—their first event of this kind, packed with insights from industry leaders, hands-on workshops, and networking with fellow impact-driven entrepreneurs. Speakers Siobhan Mears, 🌍 Luke Ireland, kevin jackson, Mike Moulder and Ed Timings, shared invaluable advice drawn from their own experiences. Topics ranged from when to take 'the leap' and building a community to support you, to managing risk with a business plan and sustainable growth. It was all about practical guidance from people who’ve truly ‘walked the walk.’ Our founder and managing director, Ed Garrett, joined the headline panel to share his own journey, discussing the realities of growing an agency and the resilience it demands. A huge thank you to Sofia Azam for organising such an inspiring event, and to all the speakers for sharing their journeys so openly. Balancing a degree and The Discourse is no easy thing, great work Miya Heap! Sign up for our newsletter using the link below to discover more about our team. https://lnkd.in/emwpPs2c #DesignTips #MarketingTips #BrandStrategy #ContentMarketing #MarketingStrategy
Balancing a Degree and a Design Agency… What started as an internship through the University of Bristol has, a year and a half later, evolved into something far beyond what I ever imagined. As a 4th-year university student, I'm in a fairly unique position, balancing both my degree and a job that complements my studies. I often get asked how I manage it, so I wanted to share a little about the role and my journey. I joined The Discourse (formerly Garrett Creative) back in Easter 2023 as a marketing intern. The internship was extended over the summer, and having already agreed to go on a year abroad to Sydney, when the time came to pack my bags and move across the world, I realised I wasn’t ready to leave. I was convinced I could continue supporting the team with marketing remotely, from a mere 10,000 miles away. So, I made the pitch, and after some convincing and careful planning, they said yes! I spent the next year managing The Discourse | Certified B Corporation™'s marketing activities part-time, alongside my marketing studies at UNSW. After returning to the UK, I worked full-time over the summer, collaborating on a range of client projects while continuing to develop our internal marketing strategies through networking events, copywriting, content creation, Google Analytics, business development (and much more). Now, I’m back to part-time as I complete my final year in Bristol, and we’ve just brought on the amazing Amber Munro-Fellowes to support our growing marketing efforts. While it sounds complicated, I genuinely feel that balancing my studies with this role has been one of the best decisions I could have made. Many times, I’ve left a lecture on something like digital marketing or customer behavior, only to head straight into the office to apply those insights directly to real projects. Being surrounded by a combination of talented creative people and academics gives me the best of both worlds as they really feed into each other. Since joining, it’s been amazing to witness the agency grow in so many ways—new team members, a London office, a full redesign, and becoming a certified B-Corp. A lot has happened in a very short amount of time, and I've loved being part of the change and contributing to it. I’m so grateful for the trust Ed Garrett, Issy Cheung, and the team have placed in me, and for the flexibility they’ve offered in creating a partnership that works for both of us. Currently, my role focuses on Marketing and Client Relations, allowing me to concentrate on our internal strategies and contribute to the agency's success. However, if there’s one thing this role—and marketing in general—has taught me, it’s the dynamic nature of the industry, so I always find myself doing something unexpected. I'm excited about what lies ahead and look forward to continuing this journey with The Discourse.

Design agency and Certified B Corporation™ | Helping businesses and charities to shift the narrative.
It was great to see so many people at the Green Tech South West event in Bristol last week 🌍 Green technology and the work taking place in our local third-sector is extremely important to us at The Discourse | Certified B Corporation™, so an event titled 'Charities doing cool things in green tech' was always going to good! The speakers were fascinating as expected 🙌🏼 Annette Lamley from Centre for Sustainable Energy presented a project they've been developing called Solar Wizard (https://lnkd.in/e-BuR9nP), which calculates the potential to generate electricity from rooftop solar panels on your home. Well worth a look if you're thinking of investing in solar. Christian Graham and Mary Stevens from Friends of the Earth presented some of their work on experiments in AI for environmental justice. Well worth checking out the project page here: https://lnkd.in/eXBtnaE9 Christian made an interesting point in saying that 'we should all be asking questions about the environmental impact of AI'. I couldn't agree more, although my question to Mary was - does anyone have the answers and are they prepared to share the information? 🤷🏻♂️ She made a good point by saying 'probably not, but its important to ask questions and challenge people and policies regardless, as eventually enough pressure will force better information and more transparency. If you're interested in the subject of AI and the environment, check out an event that Friends of the Earth are running in November - Can AI ever be environmentally friendly: https://lnkd.in/eD4EAq6Y Thanks to all the GTSW crew and community for another insightful evening Mike Harley Hannah Smith Ellen Davies Miya Heap Ingrid Morgan

Our approach to Ecosurety's Impact Report focused on minimalist, clean design, featuring bold, impactful typography to highlight the growth and maturity of the Ecosurety brand. The report combines high-quality natural photography, while vibrant colours create energy and vibrancy. By implementing a visible grid system, we achieved a structured and balanced layout that reflects their data-driven approach. Here's our creative director Issy Cheung hard at work on it! 💪 We love the final outcome, check out the full collaboration using the link in below. https://lnkd.in/d9iaQgVU #Casestudy #MarketingInspiration #BrandIdentity #DesignTips #DesignAgency
