When you are so used to the stress of the PhD, you go around looking for it when its over. When everything you've been stressing about for the last few months is suddenly over, it can feel jarring. Suddenly, one big chapter in your life is over, and for the next one, you may still need to figure out what its going to be. This is not something I hear people talk about a lot, but I do think it merits more attention. While the PhD has many upsides, it also has some hidden costs. 1st part of my convo with Vizgen President & CEO, Terry Lo, is now live and I can’t wait for you to listen in. Terry is a bit unique in our guests so far, in that he had a very clear plan to collect the types of experiences he knew he needed to succeed in the business of life sciences. After dual majoring in psychology and molecular genetics, and realizing he wasn’t “master chef” material in the lab, he got to work charting a new course. What I loved about his approach is how intentional and thoughtful he was about which skills he needed, when to collect them, and who to learn them from. So often, for scientific founders, there’s a huge world of “what you don’t know you don’t know” outside of the lab. In this episode, Terry fills in a ton of those gaps, and sort of shares the map for others to follow: – The myth of the sales extrovert, why sales is a must-have experience for founders and executives, and the importance of getting that experience under your belt early – The difficulty of differentiating “being smarter” – and collecting the specific skills to stand out to investors and other opportunities (including Business Development) – Avoiding the “jack of all trades, master of none” trap while building a broad toolkit It’s yet another way to tackle the road less traveled.
