Happy Clinical Trials Day! ⚕️ Today is a global celebration for the role clinical trials play in medical discovery and to honor the many people who work to improve outcomes through clinical trials studies. Clinical trials are research studies that help medical professionals improve the detection and treatment of illnesses. Our clinical trials program enrolls client-owned pets to evaluate the effectiveness of new drugs, find novel uses of old drugs, or investigate new approaches to surgery and/or radiation therapy to treat cancer. Many of the standard treatments used today are the result of clinical trials. We learn valuable information from every patient, and we use this information to improve their care as well as the care of future patients, both pets and people. Recent insights from the ISCHEMIA trial highlight the diagnostic equivalence between CCTA and traditional invasive coronary angiography (ICA) for risk stratification in stable CAD patients. The study reinforces CCTA's utility, especially when invasive procedures present greater risk. This supports a shift towards less invasive, yet effective diagnostic approaches in certain patient groups. We are delighted to have reached the first milestone in our e-ULTRA 10K registry with more than 500 patients recruited so far at 35 active sites. The e-ULTRA 10K study is a post market, prospective, observational, multi-center multi-national registry evaluating clinical outcomes after PCI with the BioFreedom™ Ultra coronary stent. Ultimately, we aim to recruit a total of 10,000 (10K) patients in 100 centres across the world. The study highlights the novel use of a patient-facing web portal for initial screening, followed by phone and medical record reviews. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (#ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, affects the nerve cells that control movement throughout the body. Eventually, it leads to a gradual loss of the ability to stand, walk and use one's hands. It can also impair the muscles used for speech, resulting in a loss of understandable communication. For the past 20 years, the #BrainGate clinical trials have pioneered and tested new approaches to help restore communication and mobility for people with paralysis, including people with spinal cord injury, brainstem stroke, and ALS. In a new study published in the NEJM Group, the BrainGate team at the University of California, Davis placed four small microelectrode arrays into the motor cortex of a 45-year-old man with severe dysarthria (problems producing speech) from ALS, hoping this would allow the man to communicate more quickly and easily simply by attempting to speak. The demand continues to increase with a rising incidence of cancer, technological advances in radiotherapy planning and delivery, and new indications for systemic and combined treatments.
