Retroactively applying waivers and state options to hide payment error rates is unacceptable. Shockingly, two-thirds of the country is engaging in this practice. We need to hold agency leaders accountable and place corrective action plans on every state that is doing this. Unfortunately, this won't happen when the FNS is promoting the practice and yet openly scolding 47 states for their unacceptable error rates and processing times. The SNAP program is no longer fulfilling its original purpose of supplementing nutrition and assisting people in achieving self-sufficiency. Instead, we are promoting dependency and poor health outcomes. As advocates for program integrity and emergency safety net programs, we must defend the original purpose of these programs and improve anti-hunger and health outcomes while instilling public confidence in program administration.
