How do we unleash the full potential of automated home-cage monitoring (#HCM)? For anyone who has worked extensively with HCM, this question is likely to have kept them awake at night. Well, at least it has for me. Because the potential is mind-boggling. The development of technologies for HCM in rodent research has progressed tremendously in recent years and technological advances are transforming HCM towards increasingly affordable, scalable, and modular systems. With multi-sensor integration, individual animal tracking, and #AI-assisted data analysis, current and future HCM systems are set to revolutionize studies of animal #behavior and #physiology, by enabling permanent real-time #continuous #monitoring of multiple physiological and behavioral parameters in socially housed animals. The potential impact of this development on rodent research can hardly be overstated - it's basically the emergence of true "in vivo omics" (perhaps "vivomics"🤔). A #transformation similar to the impact RNAseq and full genomic sequencing had on #genetics. The in vivo field is finally ready to leave the figurative northern and southern blots behind and start embracing the daunting complexity of the big picture. We are moving towards a big-data approach with an increasing number of available continuous in vivo metrics. These include traditional biomarkers like for example body #temperature, blood #glucose, #heart rate, #EEG, #food intake, and body #weight, as well as emerging #digital #biomarkers like #sleep patterns, #urination rates, #frailty, #aggression, #stereotypic behavior, #anxiety, and many others. All of this can be tracked in real-time and - for many of the metrics - even for the entire life of the animals. But these new #opportunities also brings significant #challenges. With multiple streams of high-resolution data spanning weeks, months, or even years, we will definitely need new #bioinformatics tools and data #repositories. Both to fully understand the dynamics of each metric, and to enable us to delineate and discover novel relationships between seemingly unrelated #metrics. But also to facilitate #sharing and #repurposing of data, similar to the public databases for nucleotide and protein sequences. Because with the wealth of information contained within a continuous multi-metric dataset, it's likely to provide answers to #research questions completely unrelated to the study for which it was collected. It's essentially all three R's in one package! But how do we get there? I don't have the answer, but over the next two days I will take part in the discussion at the COST_TEATIME meeting "The Pathway to Automation - From Home Cages to Welfare" in Brussels. The aim is to identify knowledge gaps and obstacles to overcome, and to outline a path forward in order to realize the full potential of these new and exciting #technologies.
