🚧🛠️ The aftermath of the Baltimore bridge collapse has entered a critical phase. The Unified Command, which includes the U.S. Coast Guard, US Army Corps of Engineers, and other key agencies, is undertaking the challenging task of clearing the debris from the M/V Dali, the cargo ship impacted in the incident. Recognizing the challenges that fire chiefs can suddenly find themselves in, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, Homeland Security and Terrorism Committee set out to create a Fire Service Quick Incident Response Workbook for Civil Unrest and Disturbance to help IAFC member chiefs prepare for and when required, better respond to periods of civil unrest. You also need to do a size-up. You’ll need to consider a lot of the points of the first-due units, including the type of structure, location and extent of fire, weather conditions, and all the other 13 points of size-up that you learned at the academy and from your reading. ⁠ ⁠ But your crew is not preparing to bring in a hoseline, lay a supply line, or enter the structure to search for trapped civilians. Make smart choices this week. 🎇Fireworks started an estimated 31,302 fires in 2022, including 3,504 structure fires, 887 vehicle fires, 26,492 outside fires, and 418 unclassified fires. 🎇These fires caused an estimated six civilian deaths, 44 civilian injuries and $109M in direct property damage. 🎇Children younger than 15 years of age accounted for 28% of the estimated 2022 injuries. 🎇In 2022, U.S hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 10,200 people for fireworks related injuries; Over half of those injuries were to the extremities (29% hands and fingers, 19% legs, 5% arms) and 35% were to the eyes or other parts of the head.
