CONGRATULATIONS to our #AgriculturalDerivatives desk who last week brokered a 25Kmt notional of #CME #Platts #FOB #Santos #Soybeans (SAS) for Feb25 at -20sh basis a discount versus the #CBOT Mar25 contract. Last week’s #trade is the first new #openinterest since last year. Currently they have 15 firms actively looking at this market across #commercials, #banks and #hedgefunds. The primary concern of some exporters in taking part in trading #SAS is that it could threaten the #liquidity of the #Paranagua #papermarket. Here at SSY, we believe that SAS should complement Paranagua paper not take liquidity from it. Experience shows that if one market is clearly different but offers a relative value opportunity rather than pure #arbitrage, then both markets will stimulate #pricediscovery and participation, rather than one market cannibalising the other. Commercials are the only entities who can access both SAS and Paranagua paper which offers them the unique opportunity to trade the Santos/Paranagua #portspread without any execution/delivery #risk on the Santos side. Finally a liquid SAS contract also brings another and deeper pool of liquidity in the form of financial firms allowing them to hedge FOB Santos #cargoes in increments of 5kmt to cargo size clips 60kmt or more without any #counterpartyrisk.
