Trash. It's everywhere, but we don't always see it. Sometimes you have to get into the thicket and take even a few steps off the familiar path to find it. But, it's there. Here's some not so fun facts: · There are approximately 500 million pieces of litter on Pennsylvania roads · 2,500 pieces per mile on urban roads · 1,600 pieces per mile on rural roads · 37% is cigarette butts · 30% is plastic What does this mean to us? It means risk to our health and that of the wildlife around us. The average American consumes approximately 70,000+ microplastic particles each year. The empty plastic bottle you see lying discarded on the side of the road, it eventually breaks down bit by bit into miniscule pieces that infiltrate our food and water. If you see a piece of trash where it shouldn't be, pick it up and properly discard it. It might just help your health. I volunteered yesterday with the Allegheny County Parks litter pick up event at North Park which is held the last Thursday of every month. As I was walking along the water, I noticed a dozen geese watching me snatch garbage from the brush. They have no choice but to live with the litter. It was a reminder that taking a little time to do the right thing can help the vulnerable creatures around us who suffer the consequences of our actions (or inactions). So, what I'm trying to say (in this long-winded post) is put in the work. Make the effort to help keep our community clean. It doesn't take much effort to do the right thing. New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced budget cuts that, if enacted, will essentially wipe out #communitycomposting infrastructure in #NYC, as well as threaten widely used #foodwaste drop-off sites operated by GrowNYC at Greenmarkets throughout the city. “NYC has long been a leader not only in #composting, but community composting … that keeps the composting process and #compost use local, while offering community engagement and education opportunities,” according to Institute for Local Self-Reliance. ILSR’s 2022 Community Composter Census identified New York as home to the largest concentration of community composters in the U.S.—a thriving ecosystem of local businesses, environmental nonprofits, and neighborhood gardens. #climate

On, Earth Day, theoretically the biggest holiday in terms of how "big" it is, I like to keep it small. I paddleboard a lot. It's one of the reasons I moved to Florida. In Pennsylvania, I generally paddled on the Susquehanna River, roughly 380 miles down from its beginning. 380 miles that have been mostly civilized for hundreds of years. It's difficult to go more than 100 yards or so without finding trash. There's actually an Instagram account from a guy who's been picking trash out of the water for the past several years. He's collected - literally - thousands of items. When possible, I'd pick up pieces, myself, but with so much trash and so much current, I found it impossible to make a dent. Before too long, some of what I collected would inevitably get blown off the board, despite my best efforts. In Florida, I live on a 28 mile river. It's a much smaller one in a state that's really only had measurable population for 100 years or so. On a two hour paddle, I might come across 4-6 pieces of trash and I try to pick every one of them up, from beer cans to lawn chairs. Why? Because when I leave the river will once again appear to be free of trash. At least for the day. My hope is that in doing so, my river in Florida never becomes too overwhelming to keep clean. That people will always pick up trash there because it appears wrong to not do so. So I choose a river that's "small." Likewise, I choose a tactic that's "small." There are wonderful nonprofits like the Suncoast Waterkeeper that are working to the protect my river and others in the courtroom. Organizations like the Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast are doing their best to save these waters for future generations and I'm grateful for them and others like them. But someone needs to pick up the trash, and I'm happy to do it. #earthday #florida

Offer your help, it's rewarding in many ways. 👉 Can't find an event near you? Create one! Get a group of collegues together for an hour out of the office, tackle that area that needs some love 💚 #lovewhereyouwork Make some time at the weekend and involve your family. Teach your children to #lovewhereyoulive Litterpicking equipment is normally supplied by groups but if not, invest in some gear, make it a regular thing. Adopt a street perhaps. 🌞🚚 Sunday Vinnies Soup Van Run Update 🚚🌞 Braving Melbourne's scorching summer heat, our Inner City Vinnies Soup Van team embarked on the usual Sunday run yesterday. It was a tough one, I'd have to say. The demand for food hampers was exceptionally high, leaving us without supply for our last two stops – a stark reminder of the pressing need in our community. I had never seen that before. Have you thought about it? For many of us, summer and the heat bring unique challenges and some additional ones for people experiencing homelessness: How do you store your medication in extreme heat? I was reminded of that when seeing someone with prescribed medications next to them yesterday.☀ Where do you seek refuge when temperatures soar above 35 degrees and it’s hot even in the shade? Our dedicated volunteers hit the streets daily, seeing the challenges and providing crucial support as best as possible, because, well, homelessness doesn't take a heat break. To combat heat and dehydration, we distributed special summer hampers with essentials like sunscreen, deodorant, insect repellent, caps, and extra water bottles. Socks, a year-round necessity, were also in high demand. We never seem to have enough, regardless of the seasons. I am truly privileged and humbled to be part of this impactful movement - to work with Vinnies Vic, as St Vincent de Paul Society Victoria is lovingly called, but also to be a volunteer, and I really admire those who have been so much longer than myself: During the day or the week, they juggle roles as civil engineers, school principals, electricians, carpenters. They work on international ad campaigns; they are students, mums, dads, sons, and daughters, all trying to make someone else's life who needs support just that little bit better. September 8th 2024 To the editor: North Toledo residents fight blight again. This year residents in North Toledo came together to combat blight and had another successful year. We call ourselves the North Toledo Coalition, neighbors coming together for neighborhood issues. We are advocates for our neighborhood who strive for better days. This year we organized three cleanup events, our first one was covered by The Blade (“Crew collects mess to clean up N. Toledo,” March 24). We measure our success by a few simple metrics, how long it takes to fill up the truck, how many abandoned tires are collected, and how many volunteers help. In previous cleanup events it would take us less than an hour to fill a truck up; we would collect over 50 tires easily at each event. This year’s three cleanups netted about 40 abandoned tires. We had several volunteers from different backgrounds participate. The goal of our events is to reduce blight; in turn that reduces crime, adds to neighborhood engagement, and offers hope to those residents that feel the neighborhood has been forgotten. Our efforts would not be possible without our partnerships. The city of Toledo has been so supportive with our projects, our volunteers consisted of church members from Salem Lutheran, a few Lowe’s employees and most importantly members of the community.
