Please sign the petition to save NYC community composting, yet again. As part of the Mayor's 5% budget cuts just announced, DSNY proposed cutting 100% of funding for community composting projects and compost outreach. These cuts are devastating for NYC's community composting. In total, DSNY's proposed budget will cut 115 community compost staff at 9 organizations including GrowNYC, Big Reuse, The Lower East Side Ecology Center, Earth Matter NY, New York Botanical Garden, Queens Botanical Garden Brooklyn Botanic Garden , and Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden . The 30-year-old Compost Project including the Master Composter program would be eliminated. This is a very small part of DSNY budget, and there are many other less vital parts of service - eg reducing trash collection frequency in low density neighborhoods - that could be cut instead - https://lnkd.in/ebZt9S_W

It was with significant hope and joy I read the recent Special Report in The Chronicle of Philanthropy, March 2024 edition - Power Shift. The next generation of high-profile donors don't give to universities and hospitals, it said. 🙂 😀 Instead they are much more likely to give to the environment and social justice. Wow, that is hopeful news for some environmental nonprofits who, according to statistics, already only see 4% of philanthropic giving. While I definitely see "social justice" receiving increased significant support in Michigan, I can't say the environment is...yet. That is unless your work is perceived to impact water quality, specially the Great Lakes, yet most of the water that reaches a Great Lake falls onto soil...not other water. Did you know 60% of the remaining sensitive ecosystems, forests, creeks and pollinator habitat in SE Michigan is in private hands? 60%! Conservation Easements protect private land forever, eliminating impervious surfaces, storing carbon, creating wildlife corridors, ensuring our pollinators and song birds thrive, and bonus...that land stays on the tax rolls while we partner with landowners on conservation practices. In my short 5 years working in the land trust world I have watched 3 Michigan-based foundations stop accepting grant requests for land protection due to programmatic giving priority changes. Clearly the need is great if we hope to counter the climate trends, habitat loss and improve water quality. Nonprofits we believe in: Every project we do requires wood. We are continually challenging ourselves to find alternatives, or use less, or repurpose, or find suppliers that do things with a small and sustainable footprint. And while this is undoubtedly worth the effort, we have to think harder about what is truly sustainable. We have to approach what we do as builders from a place of stewardship and be more responsible than ever with our use of building materials in all their forms. To this end, we partnered with the to offset the use of wood in all our projects. Starting in spring of 2022, we started offsetting 100% of the construction wood used in our projects by funding the planting of trees locally with WMTP. Unlike construction timber, the trees will not be harvested and will continue to grow in protected local forests to provide numerous benefits such as cleaning our water/air, capturing carbon from the atmosphere, improving local habitat, and enhancing the health & resilience of our local community. Excellent ideas and energy at the Land Trust Alliance Rally 2023 underway now in Portland, OR. The focus, grit, and creativity of the staff and volunteer leaders of land conservation nonprofits nationwide is inspiring. Land trusts, public/private cooperation, cross-border strategies, landscape-level planning, and climate adaption are some of the powerful approaches that are reshaping conservation in the U.S. today. Increased public funding is making new progress possible; now, private philanthropy needs to keep pace.
