Honor a Veteran for Memorial Day On this Memorial Day, I am honoring my Uncle Romie who was a cook in the army. He was a Forest Ranger and dressed up as Smokey the Bear to do education programs for the local community. He would climb the fire tower and look for forest fires in the national forests. His fire tower was like the one in the photo. Uncle Romie looked for something to laugh about because he reported me to my Mom for hitting boys with my red purse on the playground in elementary school which was across the road from his fire tower. I know he saw this as a random act of kindness for the boys on the playground and for me, too. I did stop the behavior after my Mom explained this would limit my supply of purses. The biggest win you can have for your organization or business is to focus on what value your strategy creates for your customers, employees, and community. Like Uncle Romie, finding the good in things and the value you bring to others is one of the keys to developing your strategy. The value is in the eyes of the beholder. What can you start doing to communicate your value to the person you are presenting to or serving? What can you stop doing that does not add value to the person you are presenting to or serving? What new strategy can you create to honor a veteran in your community? Kudos. Brava. Kudos. There aren’t enough words…well let us allow some of the evidence to speak for itself… “And then, in terms of the faculty, it's even more so. It seems like every faculty person is the same exact background, older, white individual, most likely grew up in [State], probably went to school at [College]—as well—then practiced, and they're now kind of in their retirement. So, it seems like it's almost the same individual throughout the day. I mean, there are a few faculty here-and-there that are either younger or come from different backgrounds. And, often times, those are the ones that everyone likes to go to because they're more cognizant and aware of the challenges students are facing and are more empathetic to the day-to-day things that we have to do.” Equity, diversity and inclusion are NOT buzz words or solely aspirational goals. Memorial Day is a solemn tribute to the courageous men and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originally established to honor Civil War soldiers, this day has grown into a national remembrance for all who have died defending our freedoms and values. This Memorial Day comes at a time when our nation witnesses violent protests on college campuses. Amid these reflections, we also confront controversial expressions of freedom, such as the burning of an American flag. This act, while contentious, is protected under the First Amendment as a form of free speech. It prompts us to question and debate: Does burning an American flag entail a demonstration of freedom of speech? How do we balance respect for our national symbols with the right to individual expression? These events challenge us to confront hate and evil and question what American soldiers were sacrificing their lives for. As we commemorate this day, I invite everyone to reflect: What does Memorial Day mean to you? How do we honor and perpetuate the legacy of those who have sacrificed so much?
