Last Thursday, the #KingsSpeech announced a promising and ambitious set of bills. The speech highlighted the new government's intention to reduce waiting times (within the NHS), a focus on prevention and improving mental health provision for young people. We're pleased to see a focus on mental health services under this government. Read the full speech here: https://buff.ly/4bMN8VV

It's shocking to think that only 11% of the NHS budget is allocated to mental health, especially when mental health services are in such dire need of support. And this is the turnout we get from MPs for a debate about what they themselves are calling a crisis? How many more lives need to be lost before the government wakes up and recognizes that suicide is the single biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK? It’s beyond frustrating.

Understanding legislation is tough - in this blogpost I break down the very fundamentals of the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act; the two main pieces of legislation which can be used when our minds are impaired in some way. https://wix.to/xtDrc9n

🔍 Mental Health Spotlight: NSW’s Call to Action As a health economist, I’ve always been driven by the value of human life and the impact of healthcare policies. Today, I want to address an issue close to my heart: the state of mental health services in NSW. Here is my opinion on the article posted in the Newcastle Herald Journal **The recent parliamentary inquiry into mental health care has highlighted the urgent need for action. Thousands are turned away from emergency departments, and the suicide rate in our region is a call to action we cannot ignore. We must double our efforts in suicide prevention and tailor mental health services to meet individual needs. The government’s response to the inquiry’s recommendations will be pivotal. I urge my colleagues, policymakers, and the community at large to come together. Let’s advocate for change and ensure that mental health care is accessible, proactive, and effective. Together, we can make a difference. #MentalHealth #SuicidePrevention #HealthPolicy #NSW #CommunityHealth

700,000 deaths by suicide each year globally have turned this issue into a major public health crisis. It's time that there are more open conversations to help reduce the stigma around suicide. "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" is this year's theme and requires advocating for policies that prioritize mental health, increase access to care, and provide support and understanding for those in need. The Mental Health Commission has published a monitoring report that documents the use of restrictive practices across 67 inpatient mental health centres in Ireland in 2022. The report is the fourteenth such publication by the MHC and forms part of its remit to report independently on the quality and safety of mental health services in Ireland. Chief Executive Mr John Farrelly said several positive messages could be taken from the 2022 activity report. “Overall, in Ireland, the number of restrictive practices continues to decline, and we are encouraged to observe that the number of episodes of physical restraint and the number of residents that are physically restrained have continued to decrease since 2019, countering a previous trend of increase between 2008 and 2018. While there was a 16% increase in seclusion episodes in 2022, the number of secluded patients has decreased.” Link to the full report 🔗 https://ow.ly/rrfm50Ql5T5 #MentalHealthMatters #

We've all seen how mental health issues are growing year on year in the UK, Its currently impacting about one in four individuals yearly. The lack of government funding leads to long waiting times, staff shortages, and poor facilities in mental health care. This results in worsening symptoms, higher suicide rates, and economic strain for many. Focusing solely on symptoms without addressing root causes can lead to chronic conditions, medication dependence, and intergenerational effects on families. To combat these challenges, early intervention, comprehensive care, social support, and policy changes are crucial. It's clear that mental health in the UK requires more attention and resources. By advocating for improved funding, policies, and reducing stigma, we can make a real impact. Investing in mental health care is essential for the well-being of individuals and society. #MentalHealthAwareness #UKMentalHealth #InvestInMentalHealth #EndTheStigma

The United States is experiencing a significant shortage of mental health care providers. Over 168 million Americans live in areas designated as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas without sufficient access to mental health services. This shortage is particularly severe in rural areas, with more than half of U.S. counties without a single psychiatrist! Initiatives such as integrating mental health services into primary care settings and promoting telemedicine programs are a start, but the demand for mental health services just continues to grow. Raising awareness and talking about this disparity is the first step to making sure that all Americans have access to the mental health support that they need!

Mental health is essential to a person’s life in the same way as physical health. Hesitation to talk about mental health adds to the notion that the topic is taboo. It is important to normalize conversations surrounding mental health so people can feel empowered to seek the help they need. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Normalizing these conversations with older adults may be an uncomfortable but it is important. #OlderAmericansMonth #MHAM2024
Many older adults can feel isolated, taking a toll on their mental health. Under the Biden-Harris Administration, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) launched new Medicare mental health crisis codes for 65 million Medicare seniors, to ensure they can get the support they need. #MHAM2024 #OlderAmericansMonth
