HS Commencement time in WNY. We are actually doing ours tonight & it’s one of my favorite days of the year.
When I became a HS administrator, a wise man told me, “You’ll never make everyone happy, just stick to your values.”
Each year I remind myself that as an educator, the hopes and dreams of children’s parents, grandparents & relatives are in my hands and if a student doesn’t have that type of support system, then it’s my job to be that type of person for the student. Now believe me, I have made decisions that have not made me the most popular administrator at times, but just as being a parent has also taught me, you stick with your values - hold kids accountable when they make mistakes, be stern and give them a lecture when necessary, but above all, let them know you love them & wish them the best.
You can all do me a favor: if you have a graduating relative, neighbor or friend, please take a moment to talk, call, email or share with them that “commencement” really means “beginning”, not an ending, so make sure they celebrate & enjoy themselves, but make sure to “BE SAFE”.
Make this time of year truly the “beginning” of a great future.
If you want to give them any life advice, use one of my favorites which has gained some popularity thanks to Ted Lasso:
“Be curious, not judgemental."
OK off my soap box...:-)
Enjoy the day.
