Ike Nnaebue speaks to Nigerian Independent Newspapers, about the annual Transnational Cinema Week between MA Directing students of BU, students of Film University KONRAD WOLF, Babelsberg and Nollywood filmmaking interns of LP House of Creatives, Nigeria: "While this program brings together students from different countries, its essence lies far deeper than mere internationalisation or the usual international knowledge exchanges. What sets this initiative apart is its core focus: centering indigenous ways of knowing, fostering transnational cinema consciousness, and navigating post-colonial realities. Unlike traditional international collaborations, this program does not aim merely to bridge geographic divides but to build respect for diverse knowledge systems...As the program enters its fifth year, it continues to seek better intersection of indigenous knowledge systems, transnational cinema consciousness, and safe collaborative spaces as a powerful catalyst for positive change. For us, Ike Nnaebue, Samantha Iwowo, Bjoern Stockleben, Stephan Bernardes, Hyun-Joo Lim, José Blázquez, and Bradford Gyori, this initiative is not just about filmmaking; it is about reimagining education and storytelling for a more inclusive future".
Filmmaker, CEO at LP House of Creatives. Global Speaker. Berlinale Special Jury Mention Winner, He4She Advocate. Storyteller . Nigeria Denin Partner G100 Club. Co-founder Easter Nigeria Int' Film Festival.
I had an engaging discussion with Ikechi Nzeako of Independent Newspaper about the recently concluded Transnational Cinema Week, a collaborative exchange between MA Directing students from Bournemouth University, UK; Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, Germany; and the Ike Apprentice Filmmakers of LP House of Creatives, Nigeria. 🎬✨ Varsity Film Expo 2024: A Hub for Dialogue and Innovation ✨🎬 The Varsity Film Expo at the University of Zambia successfully created a dynamic platform for dialogue and exchange around impact filmmaking, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the vital nexus between academia and practicing filmmakers. 🌍 This year’s Expo brought together students, industry professionals, and thought leaders to explore how storytelling can drive change. The Varsity Film Expo facilitated conversations on how filmmakers can use their craft to amplify SDG-driven narratives, foster innovation, and contribute to social impact. Three pieces of advice for networking at your first film festival: With Sheffield DocFest coming up in a few weeks, I’m sharing some wisdom that I’ve gained from attending a number of film festivals over the last few years. 1️⃣ The best way to sell yourself, is not to. Be your authentic self and aim to build genuine, lasting connections with people. If you get along, you’ll be more willing to help each other out in the long run. 2️⃣ Focus on connecting with people at the same stage in your career. These are the people that will end up being your collaborators, that you grow with through your career. 3️⃣ Ask lots of questions, and take a genuine interest in others, their projects, and their aspirations. Feel free to share your advice, too! #film #filmmaking #documentary #documentaryfilm #networking #filmfestivals #sheffielddocfest #filmindustry

#miff Attending film festivals is one of my favorite experiences. Here are a few reasons why: 1. Diverse Perspectives: Film festivals showcase a wide array of films from different cultures and backgrounds. This diversity broadens my understanding and appreciation of global storytelling and perspectives. 2. Networking Opportunities: These events are a goldmine for networking. Meeting filmmakers, actors, and fellow film enthusiasts often leads to meaningful connections and collaborations. 3. Creative Inspiration: The innovative and original content presented at film festivals sparks my creativity. Seeing how different filmmakers tackle unique subjects and themes inspires me in my own work. 4. Engaging Discussions: Post-screening Q&A sessions and panel discussions provide deep insights into the filmmaking process and the thematic elements of the films. This interactive element enhances the overall viewing experience. 5. Community and Shared Experience: There’s something special about sharing the experience of watching a film with an audience that truly appreciates the art form. The collective reactions and discussions foster a sense of community among attendees. Film festivals are a celebration of creativity and storytelling, and I always leave them feeling inspired and energized. If you’re passionate about films, I highly recommend attending one!

In the world of filmmaking, a common myth often circulates: the belief that the Middle Eastern film industry is stagnant and lacks innovation. This simply isn't true! What we’re witnessing is a vibrant and transformative movement reshaping our cinematic landscape. Recent initiatives like Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 are accelerating growth by providing essential support to filmmakers, establishing robust infrastructures, and creating vibrant film festivals such as the Red Sea International Film Festival. It's an exciting time, as films like "Wadjda" and "Capernaum" have garnered international acclaim, showcasing the wealth of talent and unique narratives that our region possesses. This myth endures due to historical limitations—such as censorship and lack of funding—that have often obscured innovative efforts. Misunderstandings about cultural narratives can also fuel misconceptions, leaving people unaware of the rich, diverse voices emerging from the MENA region. So, here's how you can challenge this myth: Support local filmmakers, attend film festivals, and share these powerful stories. Engage with the art form that is not just entertainment but a reflection of our culture and heritage. Let's celebrate and promote the incredible growth and creativity unfolding in our industry! What's a myth you’ve encountered in our field that deserves debunking? Share your thoughts! 🌟🎬 #MiddleEasternCinema #Vision2030 #SupportLocalFilmmakers #FilmFestivals #CulturalHeritage #Artistry

The African film industry has made significant strides in recent years, but there's still a long way to go. The lack of experimentation and risk-taking is stifling creativity and holding us back from producing films that truly resonate with global audiences. We need to challenge ourselves to tell more nuanced, complex, and visually stunning stories that showcase the depth and diversity of African experiences. The comfort zone is a seductive trap, and it's easy to get stuck in it. But complacency is the enemy of progress. By embracing new ideas, techniques, and collaborations, we can elevate the standard of African filmmaking and make a lasting impact on the global cinematic landscape. So, let's take a step back and assess our approach. Are we merely replicating the same formulas and styles, or are we pushing the envelope and exploring new frontiers? Are we prioritizing artistic expression over commercial success, or are we sacrificing creativity for the sake of box office returns? It's time to break free from the comfort zone and challenge the norm. Let's collaborate with international filmmakers, experiment with new genres and styles, and invest in innovative storytelling techniques. Let's create films that not only entertain but also educate, inspire, and challenge our audiences. The future of African cinema depends on our willingness to take risks and push the boundaries. So, let's do it. Let's challenge the status quo and create a new wave of African films that will be remembered for generations. #filmmaking #Africanfilms #Africanstories #Africancinema #Africanfilmindustry

New year, new season at CIFF! Join in! Because CIFF stands for: Highest quality The selection of feature and short films is based on the strictest artistic standards. Our independent jury views each submitted film several times to make a well-founded judgment. CIFF is completely free of financial or institutional constraints, so the quality of the films is the only deciding factor. Affordable film festival fee With a moderate fee starting at €12, CIFF is open to all filmmakers. This gives every film a chance and the opportunity to be included in the program. Diversity of genres The festival presents a wide range of genres and themes to celebrate the diversity of contemporary film and make it accessible to a wide audience. Live award ceremony With a celebratory awards ceremony, CIFF is a unique place where the passion for independent cinema is celebrated. CIFF creates a stage for stories that need to be told and voices that deserve to be heard. Transparent evaluation For each award-winning film, the jury publishes a short public statement of reasons to make the decision-making processes understandable. Dialogue with filmmakers CIFF attaches great importance to giving space to the voices of filmmakers. Interviews that are conducted when the film is submitted provide insights into the visions and thoughts of the artists. These interviews are published in the official festival catalogue to increase the visibility of the filmmakers and expand their audience. Personal exchange As part of the meet-and-greet, filmmakers and film teams have the opportunity to exchange ideas with the audience in person. In addition, video interviews with the filmmakers are published on the festival website under the title “Cittador’s Talks” to make their thoughts and stories accessible to a wider audience.
