We're proud to have been part of the Eden Campus development in Kingston, London. The major mixed-use development in Kingston Upon Thames, features 363,000 sqft of office space, parking for 354 vehicles (including electric charging facilities), ample cycling spaces, and a residential building. With £25m worth of MEP services, CPW collaborated with the project team in developing the CAT A and partial CAT B MEP designs for the offices. The project benefited from a fabric-first approach and incorporated high-efficiency air source heat pumps combined with thermal storage for heating and cooling, LED lighting, 4-pipe fan coil units, and PV panels for sustainability. Achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating, it has been developed with a focus on achieving a low level of embodied carbon. For those designing and delivering large scale developments on challenging sites, the ability to properly visualise future buildings, places and new infrastructure before they're built is not just exciting—it's essential. In complex projects, seeing a design come to life before construction begins is crucial for making informed decisions. It allows clients to better understand and engage with the project, which is invaluable when finalising those details that may be harder to interpret from plans. These visualisations are more than just 'nice to have' images; they are vital tools that make the design process tangible. They provide a clear picture of how proposed solutions will respond to the existing environment, aiding in identifying potential issues and optimising efficiency. Clients can then fully visualise their project, making it easier for them to engage, contribute meaningful feedback and feel confident in the decisions being made. Proud to be part of this project in visualising the new government hub in York, #creativedesign #3dvisualisation #architecture #atkinsrealis
As lead designer for the Government Property Agency's new government hub in York, we’re delighted to announce the plans have been approved by the City of York Council Planning Committee. This is a fantastic scheme which puts sustainability and wellbeing at the heart of the design, as well as ensuring the scheme is sensitive to its unique context in the heart of the historic City of York. It will be home to up to 2,600 civil servants when complete and features solar panels, air source heat pumps and a green roof, as well as 230 cycle spaces and a planted pedestrian area. We’re proud to have been the multidisciplinary design partner to the GPA for the York Central Government Hub, working alongside partners Homes England and Network Rail. Embracing Retrofit Retrofit might not be new, but it’s experiencing a major resurgence, thanks to the growing focus on sustainability and net-zero goals. 🌱 We've all seen it, London’s skyline transforming, not just with new builds but with refurbished landmarks like Space House, IBM HQ and more. Contractors like Mace and BAM UK & Ireland are showing that retrofitting is not only about preserving the past; it's about creating future-ready, high-performing workspaces. 🏢 But it's no simple task. Retrofitting poses unique challenges that require deep planning, early-stage surveying, and collaborative contracting. This new wave is pushing us to embrace challenges, whether it’s dealing with asbestos, design changes, or balancing heritage with modernity. 🤔 What do you think, is retrofit the future of sustainable construction? Drop your thoughts below. 👇 #retrofitting #sustainability #officefitout #buildspace #deliberatelydifferent

#Greystar has secured planning to build two towers providing over 800 build to rent homes in #Croydon, South London. One #Lansdowne Road build to rent scheme The long-vacant One Lansdowne Road site will see 50 and 31-storey towers built using volumetric offsite construction. Modular specialist #TideandVision has been involved in the design work for the project drawn up by architect #HTA Design. Building facades will be a mix of terracotta and metal The scheme, which narrowly passed planning with the committee chair casting a deciding vote on a split committee decision, will go to the London mayor for final approval. The proposals include a new public green square, flexible workspace and retail as well as improving connections to nearby East Croydon Station. Both towers are expected to cost around £260m to build using faster volumetric construction methods. Additionally, the development, which provides 15% affordable housing, will incorporate photovoltaic panels and air-source heat pumps to minimize carbon emissions.

Passive House design is gaining traction in multifamily development, offering substantial energy savings and promoting sustainability. Despite misconceptions, it applies to various building types and has seen significant growth in the U.S. Furthermore, it differs from Net Zero and LEED certification, focusing on reducing utility grid demand and building envelope performance. While concerns about construction costs exist, the long-term savings often outweigh the initial investment. However, implementing Passive House elements requires expertise and careful planning, challenging the notion that they're simple add-ons to existing plans. Understanding these facts is crucial for realizing the potential of Passive House construction in advancing sustainability and enhancing residential value. As of today, May 1st, the Australian Building Codes Board and the Victorian Government have implemented significant updates to the National Construction Code, transforming the way new homes are built. These recent changes to the NCC focus on accessibility with wider doorways and hallways, an “accessible” shower and toilet to the ground floor, as well as improved energy efficiency (including insulation), condensation mitigation and more. Every new home build now also requires a 7-star energy rating. By elevating the minimum energy rating from six to seven stars and incorporating accessible housing design principles, future homes will be more energy-efficient and accessible for all. These changes are a huge step towards creating homes that are not only more comfortable but also more cost-effective to run in the long run. At Archiclad, we are committed to being your trusted solution provider. As these exciting changes in the National Construction Code come into effect, we are here to support and guide you through the transition.
