The number of people from backgrounds underrepresented in the creative industries that don't apply for jobs because of financial constraints is increasing, according to research by Creative Access. The social enterprise surveyed individuals in its community working in or looking to pursue a career in the creative industries to examine how financial barriers impact career progression. It found 82% of respondents had not applied for jobs because of financial barriers, an increase of five percentage points since 2021. The figure increased to 84% among respondents in broadcasting and to 90% when considering only respondents working in the arts. What you should NEVER do while approaching a Hiring Manager? Last week, I shared an exciting opportunity within my network. The response was overwhelming, with connection requests flooding in and messages pouring in from potential candidates. The opportunity was crystal clear—it was an Early Career Program tailored for those just starting their professional journey, with a specific requirement of up to 2 years of experience. ❌ However, I was taken aback by the number of individuals with over 15 years of experience expressing interest. Some seemed to be drawn solely by the prestige of the organization, overlooking the actual fit for their skills and experience. Similarly, I encountered a situation last month when I posted an opportunity for a graphic design intern and received responses detailing professional experience and salary expectations. In other instances, candidates repeatedly message for every opportunity posted, regardless of whether it aligned with their background. 💬 The message is clear: when you reach out to a hiring manager, you're competing with countless others for attention. They have limited time to review your message, and if it's apparent that you haven't taken the time to understand the job opportunity or its eligibility criteria, it not only results in a missed opportunity but also leaves a negative impression of your professionalism. 💡 So, here's a word to the wise: Approach strategically, demonstrate your understanding of the opportunity, and showcase how your skills align with the role. By doing so, you'll not only stand out but also leave a lasting impression that could open doors to future opportunities. The #1 reason you haven't landed your dream job yet 👇 Two weeks ago, I worked on a client's CV. She was a product designer looking for a remote or hybrid role with a tech company. After working on her CV, she was very impressed. She wanted me to help her craft a cover letter too. Then, I asked her to share a sample of one of the jobs she was interested in applying to. She shared with me a role that required 5+ years experience as a design manager. She had only 18 months experience as a product designer and not as a design manager. I asked her not to waste her time applying for that role since she didn't have the prerequisite skills and experience. She agreed. Then, it dawned on me - The number 1 reason you're applying to tons of roles and not hearing back is because you're applying to the wrong jobs. Before you apply for any job, make sure you read the job description very very well. You don't need to have 100% of the skills required nor do you need to have all the number of years of experience mentioned. But … Don't apply for roles that are completely off your alley! If you have 0-1 year experience, you might be looking for internship opportunities. If you have 1-3 years experience, you might be looking for entry level roles. If you have 3-10 years of experience, you might be looking for mid-level roles. If you have 10+ years of experience, you might be looking for senior level roles. You can't compare the skills and experience of a marketing executive to that of a Chief Marketing Officer. Save yourself the time and heartbreak! 82% of professionals miss the personal interactions and human connections of offline work. Having experienced both offline and online work, I can confidently say that there is a special charm to offline work that online work just can't replicate. During the pandemic, I did two internships online, and that's when I realized: While the convenience and flexibility of working from home were appealing, I missed offline work's personal interactions and human connections. The screen became a barrier between me and others, and I longed for the genuine conversations and shared experiences that offline work offered. Offline work allows for spontaneous conversations, body language cues, and genuine human connections that can be difficult to replicate online. A sense of camaraderie and teamwork comes from working side by side with colleagues, which can be lacking in a virtual environment. In conclusion, while online work has advantages, there is something special about offline work that cannot be replaced. The personal connections, sense of community, and shared experiences make offline work a unique and valuable experience that should not be overlooked. What are your views?
