WESTERN CIVILIZATION Western or modern civilization is not the property of a certain race or community. It owes entirely to the discovery of hidden natural laws and the development of a technology which benefitted and still benefits the entire humanity. Lecture of interest: Xwélmexw Hakw’eles: “Remembering Ourselves”—Transformation and Other Indigenous Governing Principles "The Xwélmexw People of S’ólh Téméxw have and continue to live by governing principles that are thousands of years old, one of which is the power of Transformation. This Indigenous governing principle, along with others, have seen us through at least one ice age, several landslides, volcano eruptions, famines, and floods – and will certainly see us through this current age of colonization." This truth is in complete contrast to the colonial narrative that Indigenous Peoples don’t have their own Governing Structures or Principles. In this lecture, the speakers shared research findings on Indigenous Governance and the ways in which these Indigenous Governing Principles are being applied to address current colonial problems. At this event, Sto:lo Scholar Dr. Wenona Hall shared her PhD research findings on Indigenous Governing Principles. Alongside Dr. Hall was si:ya:m Charlene Aleck and Rueben George from səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation), who shared their experiences, teachings and knowledge in abiding by Xwélmexw Governing Principles even while living under a colonial regime. Tensions in Dutch society have been high in recent weeks regarding the National Commemoration Day on May 4. As a result, unprecedented measures have been taken in advance, especially regarding the commemoration ceremony on the Dam. These include the prohibition of banners and flags, which goes against Article 7 of the Dutch constitution guaranteeing freedom of speech. How can we truly remember and learn from the past, if we do not face present tensions and concerns? Remembrance is also a reminder to never repeat the same mistakes again. This includes the prohibition of censorship and protecting the right to protest, fundamental rights that are now threatened. We must ask ourselves: how can we promote a culture of commemoration if we don’t let the lessons of the past guide our actions of today? #commemorationday #4mei #dodenherdenking

"This is the first time in Canadian history that [a] colonial government has recognized Indigenous title across an entire terrestrial territory, and it’s the first time this kind of recognition has occurred outside of the courts. Experts say it marks a new path toward Indigenous reconciliation." https://lnkd.in/g3vWG3UU? #IndigenousRights #HaidaNation #BCpolitics #LandRights #Reconciliation #FirstNations #CanadianHistory #IndigenousTitle #LegalRecognition #NegotiationSuccess #EnvironmentalStewardship #IndigenousSovereignty #LandBack #HistoricAgreement #TraditionalTerritory #Justice #Respect #MutualUnderstanding

We stand with the Maya People of southern Belize! 🌍 We urge the Belizean government to respect the human and property rights of the Maya. A recent draft policy threatens severe limitations on Maya lands, jeopardizing their existence and violating international law. 👥 On 27 January, Maya communities gathered to reject this policy, inviting dialogue. Shockingly, the government responded with hostility, fueling anti-Maya sentiments. We reject this characterization and stand in solidarity with the Maya People. 📢 We call on the Belizean government to uphold the rule of law by implementing the 2015 Caribbean Court of Justice Consent Order. The draft policy violates international conventions and declarations ratified by Belize. #MayaRights #IndigenousJustice #LandRights #HumanRights 🌿
