Biodiversity Haven in Carrigaline Community School Having recently visited the Biodiversity Haven we created with Carrigaline Community School last March, we are always amazed to see the level of growth of the trees - anywhere from half a meter to a meter in 6 months. Once the soil conditions are created correctly at the beginning, the trees and accompanying plants flourish. It's is also fascinating to see that each Biodiversity Haven attracts different accompanying plants. This one in Carrigaline had self seeded oak, white Campion (not native but a beautiful wildflower nonetheless) and two different types of Vetch in one small part with poorer quality soil. Next year should see more surprise companion plants before the canopy closes in a couple of years.

Søuld has been involved as one of the examples to show and inspire how Danish companies can work with biodiversity. Hear co-founder Kirsten Lynge tell the very short version of the story below (in Danish). Collecting eelgrass for Søuld takes place in a delicate relationship with wild eelgrass meadows that naturally produce and release eelgrass leaves during the summer and fall. When the dead, yet green eelgrass is removed from the coast instead of decomposing, nutrients are removed from the marine environment, which helps prevent eutrophication and algae blooms that threaten the eelgrass meadows. As Søuld grow, we are dedicated to keep developing and assessing our eelgrass collection methods in conversation with relevant actors – Tænketanken Hav, Kystdirektoratet (The Coastal Directorate), all the small creatures that live or take a break on the coast and more. Global biodiversity is threatened and declining faster than at any other time in history. That is why Industriens Fond, WWF Verdensnaturfonden / WWF Denmark and DI - Dansk Industri have created an online platform where 14 companies that have ventured into working with biodiversity share their experiences with, among other things, value chains, communication, nature projects, reporting, and much more. Whether you call it biodiversity loss, nature depletion or the ongoing disappearance of animals, plants and habitats, its really sad. There are several ways to support biodiversity. One is to protect existing ecosystems. This is critical to maintain continued higher carbon sequestration of old forests, and maintaining complex inter-relationships of all of the biota within it. This is called “in-situ preservation”. It is also very important to save biodiversity with “ex-situ” models, such as seed banks and botanical gardens. We need to collect and save seeds so those forest restorationists who are doing the work of planting will have resources to work from. We need to save seeds now. Do you know how many seed banks there are in the world today? Please contact me to discuss this. We must remain loyal to the Earth. This notion should be the foundation of our lives and actions

Good day all; Today is the International Day of Forests 2024 & the theme, ‘Forests & Innovation’. The UN General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 21st of March as the International Day of Forests in 2012. The Day celebrates & raises awareness of the importance of all types of Natural forests. On each International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national, & international efforts to organize activities involving forests & trees, such as tree planting campaigns (remember to only plant them where they occurred naturally & historically!). The theme for each International Day of Forests is chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF). The UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) & the Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) organize the Day in collaboration with governments, CPF, & others. A lot of people call plantations “Forests”. A plantation can never be a Forest! Natural forests are composed of a wide range of trees, shrubs, grasses & flowers with the trees being irregularly spaced, have incredible biodiversity, conservation value & ecosystem services & functionality. In a plantation, we have what is called monoculture, where only a single type/species of tree is grown for economic value. There can however be some elements of “forest” vegetation in the usually very isolated & fragmented patches of remaining natural forest adjacent to plantations, which can be connected via corridors to larger patches of natural forest. Today, we celebrate the International Day of Biodiversity! 🦌🌲🦜🌵🪸🐝🌺🦈🦠 Every year since 1922, May 22nd has been a day to recognize the diverse beauty of the species inhabiting our planet. 🌎 This year’s theme is “Be Part of the Plan”, a CTA for stopping and reversing biodiversity loss. Everyone, whether you act as an individual, business, community, or governing body/lawmaker, can be a part of The Biodiversity Plan. Biodiversity goes beyond a variety of different species of plants, animals, and microorganisms. It also includes genetic variations within species (i.e. breeds) and the wide variety of ecosystems. While some of these differences may seem insignificant, every species and ecosystem are linked to each other and rely on each other to survive and thrive. Biodiversity is one of our most vital resources. We rely on the diversity of species for many things, especially food and medicine. 🌾🧪 And biodiversity loss affects us all. 🐝 For example, we rely heavily on pollinators, such as bees, to pollinate our food and agricultural crops. But bee populations have been declining substantially. Without bees, we may face agricultural instability and the loss of crop species. Could you imagine a world like that? As humans, it's our duty to protect the biodiversity on this Earth. 🌿Let’s reverse biodiversity loss in the Netherlands together🤝 It’s not going well with the number of insects in the Netherlands, and as a result, we are losing plant species that rely on pollination by insects as well. This is a recent finding from one of our scientists, Kaixuan Pan, who analysed 87 years of measurements from over 365,000 plots. The news is alarming for our biodiversity and food security. ‘75 per cent of our crops and 90% of the wild plants rely on insects.’ You can help nature a little bit. Pan and his supervisor Geert de Snoo give some tips ⤵️ 🌱 Insects need greenery. Participate in an initiative to green your municipality, remove some tiles, or create a plant border. This way, we create a greener landscape from our own backyard or balcony (we know from recent research by Joeri Morpurgo that even small gardens contribute to biodiversity!) 🔍 Scientists need your help with studying biodiversity in the Netherlands. Lend a hand to science by participating in one of the citizen science projects!
