February 11 is International Day of Women and Girls in Science when we recognize the significant contributions of women in science and encourage the possibilities of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) for future generations. In honor of this global celebration we spoke with Aanchal Preet Kaur, a researcher with the Integrated Therapies Laboratory at Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, a division of Providence Cancer Institute of Oregon, about the journey that led her to a career in science and what advice she has for young women considering a STEM education. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a career in science? Growing up, my fascination with mathematics and the sciences was evident. Encouraged by influential teachers and inspiring women in the scientific community, I felt a calling towards research. Particularly, my immunology professor during my undergraduate studies left a profound impact on me with her unwavering passion for the subject. Fueled by my own intrigue and hands-on experience with research projects under her guidance, I embarked on a path that led me to pursue a master's in cancer immunology and biotechnology, laying the foundation for my current career trajectory. What advice or message do you want to pass on to young women thinking about pursuing a career in scientific research? To aspiring young women contemplating a career in scientific research, I urge you to pursue your passions fervently. One thing they all said, which also echoed what the researchers we talked to have said for a long time, was that funding for events supporting events and initiatives related to training in unconscious bias, diversity, inclusion, culture, and related topics was not prioritized. And also that the researchers and staff that wanted to make a change had to spend their free time doing so. This led to us launching both the LF Scientific Enrichment Prize (to honor and showcase those who are good examples) and LF Diversity Call (for supporting local initiatives). As with any new call we were wondering how it would be received out there. And we could after a few rounds see that we didn't get as many applications as we thought we would. Was the call unclear? Was it yet another burden? Was the timing wrong? I mean, we did get some really great applications, but as we would like to see even more and to hopefully nudge more into being pro-active in these areas luck would have it that we got asked if we would contribute with a case at UCPH's summer school on "gender, innovation, and diversity in public and private institutions." We, (drumroll) said yes! we have the perfect case for you! And, also, lucky for us the call was scrutinized, analyzed and revised by a talented group of students. Based on their expert input we have now changed the call text and we are excited to see the result of our joint efforts. The U.S. National Science Foundation has awarded teams from South Dakota, New Hampshire and Maine approximately $8 million each through the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research Collaborations for Optimizing Research Ecosystems Research Infrastructure Improvement program. This initiative aims to enhance states' research and development competitiveness and drive scientific progress nationwide. "By boosting their state's R&D capabilities, these teams are poised to drive use-inspired research and transform STEM education and workforce development within their regions." This investment underscores our commitment to advancing research and building robust research infrastructure hubs, fostering innovative ecosystems, and creating pathways for economic growth and societal impact,” said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan. Teams will spend the next four years collaborating across diverse academic, governmental, industry and nonprofit sectors to address core research infrastructure needs. Mentoring across difference and distance: building effective virtual research opportunities for underrepresented minority undergraduate students in biological sciences Moreover, this study emphasizes the role of virtual mentorship opportunities in fostering inclusivity and support for individuals from underrepresented groups in STEM fields. By overcoming barriers to full participation in the scientific community, virtual mentorship programs can create a more equitable and inclusive environment for aspiring researchers. This is me, at my first interview for a fellowship position under a program that existed back in 2010 called MBRS RISE, funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH): Intramural Research Program (IRP) This program truly launched my STEM career. Being part of it at Florida International University not only equipped me with technical skills but also instilled in me the resilience and determination needed to thrive in any endeavor. Through this program, I learned the importance of diversity in STEM and the impact it can have on innovation. Transitioning from research to teaching, I utilized my experiences to effectively communicate complex concepts and inspire a new generation of scientists. As an organ and tissue family advocate, I worked hand in hand with families and medical professionals to transform tragedies into miracles. Now, as one of the inaugural hires at a novel startup, I draw upon the lessons learned from my journey. From problem-solving to leadership, every aspect of my background has prepared me for the challenges of building and scaling. However, my journey wouldn't have been possible without the support of programs like the one that propelled me forward and the mentorship from extraordinary professors like Dr. Ophelia Weeks and Mehmet Tevfik DORAK. It's crucial to continue funding initiatives that empower underrepresented women in STEM. By providing access and support, we can unlock the potential of countless individuals and drive innovation forward. Exciting to be able to share this new research; the Office of the Women in STEM Ambassador has conducted a trial to determine the impact of anonymising applications for access to specialised scientific equipment. ANSTO's Australian Centre for Neutron Scattering (ACNS) was involved in this study. The researchers found that anonymisation boosted success rates for early-career researchers, but had little impact on success rates by gender, which were already similar before the trial. This suggests that anonymising applications for scientific equipment opens doors for early-career researchers, enhancing their chances of success. The implications extend beyond application outcomes; anonymisation may create a positive ripple effect in the career pipeline, diversifying the research pool, and supporting the broader issue—retaining and advancing researchers facing barriers in STEM research.
