Fostering Unity for a Secure Future I was inspired by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s recent post regarding the 21st meeting of the Joint Defence Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Ministers of Defence. It is heartening to see GCCleaders coming together in Doha to discuss critical strategic issues that affect not only our nations but the wellbeing of the Gulf region. In a world facing unprecedented challenges, the emphasis on strengthening cooperation and knowledge exchange is vital. It highlights a shared commitment to not only ensuring security and stability but also to nurturing the bonds of fraternity that exist amongst the peoples of the GCC. Helsinki Security Forum 2024 opened with an engaging discussion “Towards a Total Defence of Europe.” The panel focused on how the growing complexities of societal security call for a renewed approach to total defence – one that goes beyond military concerns and engages all sectors of society. Our distinguished speakers addressed the importance of a whole-of-society approach to national defence, emphasising that preparedness must extend across every sector, including organisations, NGOs, and civilians.
