very excited to be on this team with Zhe He, PhD, FAMIA at the helm. we'll be looking to build a patient-facing tool to help older adults better understand lab results with tailored question prompts. this is the beginning of seeing #clinicalinformatics and #AI change how we practice medicine. I tell my students that time changes how we practice dramatically. But I am convinced that in 3 years, AI and the like, will change how we practice dramatically. Like jumping from Atari to VR.

I’d like to share the exciting news that we have been awarded a five-year $1.02 million R21/R33 grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for our LabGenie project. The goal of this project is to design, develop, and evaluate a patient-facing tool LabGenie to help older adults better understand lab test results with tailored question prompts and visualization so they would be more confident in discussing their results with providers and better engage in healthcare. We will also test retrieval-augmented generation and large language models on the tailored questions about lab tests. We have been working on this project for five years with a number of papers. I’m grateful to work with my dearest colleagues Drs. Mia Liza A. Lustria, Zhan Zhang, Xiao Luo, Mike Killian, Henna Budhwani, Karim Hanna, Lisa Granville, Nickie Buckner on this project. Mia and I will be MPI on this grant. I’m incredibly thankful for Dr. Joe Frascella’s help with connecting with TMH for the guidance, and unwavering support from Dean Jing Wang, Drs. Dawn Carr, Yang G., and Neil Charness on our Advisory Panel. This would not have been possible without the gracious support from the Institute for Successful Longevity for the pilot funding, which allowed us to conduct important preliminary work to support the AHRQ grant.

Innovation, collaboration, and trust play critical roles in addressing health disparities and meeting the needs of patients. Below is presentation I recently gave at HITLAB Digital Symposium on Techquity, the digital divide, intersection between innovation, health equity, and the role that social trust plays in activating and reimagining solutions that better serve communities. https://lnkd.in/gPqm_pvC

I have so much FOMO not going to the Milken Institute 2024 GLOBAL CONFERENCE next week. Esp missing this session which will probably be a master class on the topic. Revolutionizing Research: Democratizing Clinical Trials Wednesday, May 8, 2024 08:30 am - 09:30 am PDT The collective clinical research system needs to be thoroughly reconsidered: designed with end users in mind; built to earn trust in research aims and execution; able to maximize the likelihood of engaging the targets—people and communities—stakeholders need to reach. We need to disrupt the paradigm, taking a person-centered, data-driven approach to engage the broadest population of Americans in opportunities to take part in research. New players entering the research enterprise are bringing unique abilities to generate participant and community insights that can influence research objectives, design, and adoption; define, track, and improve participants’ journeys through the research process; measure and drive accountability for outcomes that matter to participants and communities as well as research stakeholders; and reframe research as an opportunity for inclusion rather than a requirement for diversity. Moderator Michelle McMurry-Heath Speakers Silas Buchanan. Sir Martin Landray Susan Coller Monarez Fabian Sandoval, MD Andrew Trister, MD PhD

The breadth and depth of cutting-edge science at the 1st Helmholtz Health Summit (https://lnkd.in/dtC68rET) was truly amazing! …and should be even more recognized by the public, by policy makers, by industry, and by investors. It also became apparent once more that the major challenge in Germany and Europe remains systematic and rapid translation & transfer of this cutting edge science into tangible outcomes, applications and products for our patients. This requires new formats and initiatives for academia and industry to work hand in hand, translational KPIs other than only judging scientific outputs on publications, and training opportunities for next-generation researchers to foster entrepreneurship and carreer opportunities in this space!
