Turn to the future of the mining sector. Building Critical Mineral Security for a Sustainable Future is a one-day course that will help you examine key challenges facing the mining sector: environmental damage, health consequences for workers and communities, land encroachment, and human displacement. Propose designs for a participatory approach that firms and governments can use to engage with communities and secure a social license to operate. Learn about the process of developing and implementing a single set of standards to govern responsible mining, and how the U.S. can strengthen its relations with indigenous groups located on or near critical mineral reserves domestically based on global experience. Interested in learning more? We invite you to join us in person or virtually for this upcoming course on April 18. The recent events surrounding Lomiko Metals Inc.'s proposed graphite mine in Quebec's Laurentians region underscore the critical importance of securing and maintaining a social license to operate in mining projects. Community concerns about environmental impact and external involvement highlight the necessity for transparency and community-wide engagement. Without community consent, even projects with economic benefits can face significant opposition. Securing a social license goes beyond regulatory compliance—it's about earning trust and support from impacted communities. Meaningful dialogue and collaboration with residents, environmental groups, and government bodies are essential to address concerns and align projects with community values. Mining projects must be economically viable and socially and environmentally responsible. Building positive relationships with local communities is crucial for any mining initiative's long-term success and sustainability. #Mining #SocialLicense #CommunityEngagement #SustainableMining #EnvironmentalStewardship #Graphite #ElectricVehicles #Quebec https://lnkd.in/gfg_eTNX

The Blended Capital Group - ESG, Governance, Strategy and Finance Integration Leadership Focused on Impact Delivery
Facts: 🏹 we need more #criticalminerals 🏹 conflict-free #mining growth depends on stakeholder trust and the ability to earn social license The attached story is about #indigenous relationships in Ontario. By rushing the development of the mineral rich Ring of Fire region, Ontario’s government has created pushback from Indigenous communities with lands in the area. By not focusing on fostering trust and collaboration, development has been slowed down instead of sped up. Context - 54% of worldwide critical minerals projects are on or adjacent to Indigenous lands. More broadly, communities make or break conflict-free projects. The speed of trust is a ‘hard’ speed limit - it can’t be broken. Earnest transparent engagement and solutions that respect local realities are essential for building trust. Are mining companies flexible with business models in ways that integrate with differentiated local realities? #localcontent? Modular projects? Ownership schemes that may include communities? Artisanal miners are another key stakeholder group that matters. Often extending from nearby communities and being early indicators for LSM exploration, LSM collaboration with #asm flips narratives from conflict to collaboration while supporting broader license with communities. Risks are lowered, productivity increased, a win/win given that outcomes for artisanal miners are to enhance dignity and productivity, while #sustainabledevelopment can be triggered for communities. The Blended Capital Group understands the commercially realistic opportunities that combine dignity and productivity in the 45 million person strong ASM sector, along with our partners we are committed to reimagining outcomes in the sector. An interesting CNBC article this week examines the tension between the increasing demand for minerals, the vast potential in seabed minerals, and the need to protect marine ecosystems. Michael Lodge, secretary-general of the UN's International Seabed Authority (ISA), believes deep-sea mining could soon become a reality due to global interest in the industry and the potential for cost-effective mineral production. The conundrum lies in the juxtaposition of the insufficient supply of energy transition minerals needed to transform the energy sector and the uncertainty about the full environmental impacts of deep-sea mining. Multinationals such as Google, Samsung, and Volvo have pledged not to source minerals from the seabed. The article delves into the conflicting pressures of advancing the energy transition without accelerating biodiversity loss. The ISA plans to establish a regulatory framework for commercial-scale deep-sea mining, but environmental groups argue it cannot be sustainable and will lead to ecosystem destruction and species extinction. Definitely worth a read. #SustainabilityCommunication #Mining #Regulation #Environment #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #BiodiversityLoss
