The pressure on companies to address their impact on climate is primarily focused on their operations and manufacturing processes. But corporate philanthropy can also play an important, supporting role in a company’s overall efforts. In an article in GreenBiz, John Moon, Senior Vice President and Sustainable Philanthropy Lead at Wells Fargo notes that “By bringing a comprehensive approach, learning with pilot programs and empowering nonprofits to leverage incentives, corporate philanthropy can effectively help build resilient communities for future generations.” Read more here: https://zurl.co/0Fep #ClimateResilience #CorporatePhilanthropy #SustainableGrowth

“Among the $811 billion of global philanthropic giving in 2022, less than 2% was directed towards climate mitigation action.” - World Economic Forum This caught me by surprise. It will take trillions of dollars to reach our 2050 goals for climate, but with ever-present immediate crises, it can be hard for a longer-term crisis, like climate change, to gain our attention. I appreciated Naomi Klein’s take on this in January’s Fire Drill Fridays session with Jane Fonda–we have a series of intersectional battles that will require intersectional leadership to navigate this “slower kind of violence”, not asking “people to choose between caring about war, caring about racism, caring about public health, and caring about climate”. Some organizations have set their sites on this growing need for climate philanthropy, including ClimateWorks Foundation and One Earth, with their own unique approaches. ClimateWorks’ approach as a philanthropy platform partnering with other organizations has granted more than $1.8 billion USD since 2008. Through an online marketplace approach, One Earth has sourced funding of over $2.7 million USD to support community and grassroot efforts across the globe since its debut in 2020. Both organizations are finding ways to raise awareness and funding and make a dent in the 2% number. If you know of other unique organizations, add them below! 🍃 2023 was the hottest year on record and, if last month's mercurial weather here in Washington, DC, is any indication, the environmental threats to business and society are only growing. As companies continue their journeys to meet #netzero commitments and, hopefully, onwards to be #netpositive (Andrew Winston, Paul Polman), they can use their flexible philanthropic capital—as well as blended approaches across their foundations and corporations—to match the urgency of acting on the most pressing environmental issues impacting business and their stakeholders today with speed and scale. In the next piece in our 2024 #corporatephilanthropy series, my FSG colleagues Laura Tilghman, Youri Tabet, and I share three trends on the horizon for corporate philanthropy leaders to be a strategic partner to business on a breadth of environmental issues. 1️⃣ Put people at the center of environmental investments. 2️⃣ Drive impact through partners to build resilience in key value chains. 3️⃣ Support collaboration within the industry or across multi-stakeholder partners to drive impact at scale. Share your feedback on the Sustainable Philanthropy Framework and Metrics to make it relevant for businesses like yours. The Sustainable Philanthropy Framework was developed to articulate the “S” in ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) goals for businesses, detailing how they can contribute in giving, volunteering and socially responsible business practices. Initiated by the National Council of Social Service (NCSS), and in partnership with NVPC - Towards a City of Good, the Framework was developed in collaboration with partners like raiSE SG, Ministry of Social and Family Development, Singapore (MSF) and the SG Cares Office, to better articulate and strengthen the Society impact area of NVPC’s Corporate Purpose Framework and Blueprint. Join the movement 🌻 Last week, we launched the Love Wānaka Impact Partner Programme - an opportunity for businesses big and small to give back and support local environmental efforts in a way that is simple, convenient, and most importantly, impactful. It’s designed to take the admin out of business giving, all the while amplifying the impact of that giving on your business and the environment at the heart of our home. Right now, we’re building out our Founding 50 – a collective of 50 businesses each donating 1% of their proceeds to support local environmental action. Here are 5 reasons to join the movement: 🌻 It's good business Building a strong purpose into your business – and backing it up with tangible action – is more important now than ever, but it’s not only a win for the environment – it’s a win for your business, too. Giving back and leading with purpose enables you to strengthen your connection with your customers and community, attract and retain top talent, and stand out amongst the crowd. 🌻 We're in it for the collective good We pool our funds for collective impact, so no matter the size of your business or your contribution, your support drives meaningful mahi (work) that will make a real difference to this place, now and into the future. 🌻 We're all about the impact Every dollar you give is destined for big things, with 100% of our funding going direct to impact. Thanks to the generous support of our delivery partners, everything we raise is on-allocated to those who need it most, whether we’re supporting immediate environmental needs through our Annual Impact Grants or growing the Endowment Fund to benefit this place long into the future. 🌻 It's not just for us, it's for our kids, and their kids, too 20% of the funds we raise are invested into an endowment fund with the support of our friends at the Wakatipu Community Foundation. This fund will grow over time, allowing for substantial, long-term funding opportunities for generations to come. 🌻 We're backed by the experts Each year, we allocate funds to local organisations who operate in the climate, conservation, and biodiversity space, all under the guidance of our independent Distribution Committee. This Committee is made up of experts in the field, meaning the hard decisions are left up to those in the know. 🌻 Bonus tip: It's easy! You can give on an annual basis or sign-up for automated monthly contributions. If your situation changes, no stress. You can change or cancel at any time. So, what are you waiting for? Join the movement now and be part of the collective of businesses giving back and making a lasting difference to this place. Corporate Organizations have a major role to play in our flight against climate Action. The Giving to Amplify Earth Action (GAEA) which is an initiative from the World Economic Forum is creating a Public-Private-Philanthropic-Partnership (PPPPs) by bringing together a community of corporate foundations and leading philanthropies to launch the Corporate Philanthropy Challenge for People and Planet to mobilize $1 billion of smart, catalytic capital towards climate and nature interventions by 2030. The partners include Ares Charitable Foundation, BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt, Foundation S, Grundfos Foundation, Google.org, Salesforce, Temasek Trust, The Coca-Cola Foundation, Workday Foundation, UBS Optimus Foundation, and the IKEA Foundation. Corporate philanthropy stands as a pivotal tool for directing resources toward climate and nature causes, encompassing vital contributions such as private capital, talent, and expertise. Through these strategic efforts, businesses can play a crucial role in fostering positive environmental impact and sustainability. During the Annual Meeting of the Forum in 2024, GAEA made a significant announcement. The organization revealed its commitment to enhance and expand existing Public-Private-People Partnerships (PPPPs) and explore novel collaborations within five thematic areas: energy, nature, industry, food, and intersections with climate. GAEA expressed its intention to collaborate closely with other groups operating in these sectors to maximize impact and effectiveness. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 17 promotes partnerships amongst all sectors to achieve its goals by 2030. Companies and philanthropic organizations committed to building partnerships toward achieving a net zero green economy should collaborate with the GAEA. https://lnkd.in/d3De6jKp Follow Sustainability Forward for update on latest trends, insights and discussions on sustainability. #sustainabilty #sustainabledevelopment #sdgs2030 #ecoconscious #sustainablebusiness #unitednations #biodiversity #greentech #actnow #generationrestoration #UNEP #climatecrisis #sdg13 #sdg17 #collaboration #PPPPs
