National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) #alumni Ali Alperen Bakır and Mehran Shahriarifar, and current NSIRC student Shahryar Manzoor, AWeldI, recently presented ground breaking research from their respective PhDs at the Fatigue 2024 Conference held at Jesus College in Cambridge, UK. The event showcased innovative studies and advances in the field of structural integrity, and was attended by researchers, scholars and industry professionals. Ali presented Structural Integrity of Cold Spray Repaired Aluminium 7075 Alloys - delving into the mechanical performance of repaired #materials under static and cyclic loading. Mehran presented Investigation on the Fatigue Behaviour of Stainless Steel 316L Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process - adding to the knowledge base by examining the fatigue behaviour of #3dprinted materials. Shahryar showcased his research in a poster: Mechanistic Understanding Of Ageing Offshore Structures - addressing the pressing issue of ageing #offshore structures, particularly those installed in the 1980s, which are reaching or surpassing their anticipated design life. As the industry continues to evolve, these findings will contribute to enhancing the performance, safety, and longevity of critical components and structures. Our recent research article entitled "Pressure Drop and Cavitation Optimization of a Relief Valve Featuring Quick Coupling Used in Radar Systems" has been published in the Arabian Journal for Science and Engineering (AJSE) (I.F. 2.9 - Q2).   Quick couplings are widely used elements for sustaining rapid connection of lines for any fluid flow, and they can operate as a relief valve when disconnected, if desired. Due to this reason, they are preferred in the cooling circuits of radar systems to avoid damage in consequence of refrigerant expansion passing through during their maintenance period. With 2-phase flow simulations verified with the experiments, design optimization of a quick-releasing coupling is performed, and a cavitation-free operation is achieved even at the upper limit of the operating range of the valve. This situation led the product to have almost twice-better pressure drop characteristics compared to its top-cat rival product in the market. It is my pleasure to take a role in this project and present such a product to the national defense industry with Dr. Öğretim Üyesi Yaşar Mutlu. A new paper is out reviewing and discussing recent developments in design-space dimensionality reduction for shape optimization, based on the Karhunen-Loève expansion (KLE, equivalent to proper orthogonal decomposition, POD, and, at the discrete level, principal component analysis, PCA). BUBBLE SIMULATION: The small gas bubbles that form and collapse in liquid can cause big problems for equipment like ship propellers. Imploding bubbles cause noise and vibration, interfering with sensors, and can even erode metal over time. UM Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering researchers developed a physics based approach to better predict these corrosive bubbles. Results can inform design of quieter ship propellers and even help develop superhydrophobic surfaces for energy-efficient designs. Read the full article below [Link]: https://bit.ly/49Jyhey

We are delighted to have our abstract accepted for MBSE-CON 2024 (The Model-Based Systems Engineering Conference). This year's theme is 'Modernising MBSE through Digital Engineering, Mission Engineering, and Modelling and Simulation' - a perfect match with our areas of expertise. Written by Mark Unewisse, Matthew Wylie, Stephen Cook and Shaun Wilson, our presentation explores a modular Digital Engineering approach to Mission Engineering. This combines Model-Based Systems Engineering with Physics-Based Modelling to underpin the design and analysis of mission capability component systems. One of the benefits of this approach is that operations analysis allows consideration of large-scale combinations of the component systems to meet the mission needs. The good news for those outside of defence is that it is not limited to defence mission and capabilities. This approach can be applied to most complex systems-of-systems across a range of industries, such as transport, ports and airports systems, energy transition projects and mining (particularly decarbonisation of mining operations).
