On any given workday, you would ordinarily find Matt Kelly representing Shoal Group Pty Ltd on a defence or space client site. As a #SystemsEngineer, he’s often embedded into a client team, supporting capability definition or undertaking verification and validation activities. But that hasn’t been the case for the past five months! From the 17th of April 2024 and for the next 143 days, Matt walked 3,837km (4,900,000 steps) and a total elevation of 139,859m during 1,142 hours of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. The freedom and simplicity of life on the trail didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for numbers, with his first update back to our shoal being these key statistics! Returning to Shoal a couple of weeks ago, he was keen to share his journey. https://lnkd.in/gG6D42Db #LifeintheShoal #systemsthinking #flexiblework #EVP #ShoalerLife

A complex systems design company, tackling challenging problems in Defence, Space, Transport, Infrastructure & Energy
About us
DEFENCE | SPACE | TRANSPORT |INFRASTRUCTURE | ENERGY Shoal is complex systems design company. We use Systems Engineering combined with Modelling, Simulation and Analysis to help our clients define, analyse, decide, optimise, and deliver technology-intensive projects in complex environments across Defence, Space, Transport, Infrastructure and Energy. We understand that complexity can rapidly escalate and create pressure on already tight schedules, capability realisation, and budgets. Or all three. Our approach is not to reduce or over-simplify. We embrace the uncertainty in complexity and use our expertise to mitigate risks and capitalise on opportunities. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Adelaide, our team extends across Australia and New Zealand.

Yesterday, Shoalers took part in National Ride2Work Day, Australia’s largest celebration of commuter riding! Our team fully embraced the day, with many choosing to ride, run, or take public transport to work as part of our ongoing Travel to Work Cup competition too. With 'engineering solutions' being our main game, Matthew Orman and Paul Greenhalf took their commute to another level, planning this 'Strava Art' on their way to work ... their commute was a little longer than usual! For the next two weeks, Shoalers will continue making thoughtful choices by riding, walking, using public transport, or ridesharing to work. Each kilometre travelled earns points for our teams, and the team with the most points at the end of the two weeks will win a $200 donation for their chosen charity. Through small actions, we’re collectively raising awareness of how our travel choices can help reduce carbon emissions. Every step counts! #Ride2Work #commuterevolution #systemsthinking #systemsengineering

Shaun Wilson, CEO of Shoal Group Pty Ltd, and Justin H., Director of Flight Safety at the Australian Space Agency, recently presented a joint paper at the 13th International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety (IAASS) Conference in Prague, Czech Republic. The paper focuses on the safety aspects of Australia’s modernised space regulatory framework, reviews the changes made since its establishment, and discusses lessons learned from the initial applications. It was co-authored with representatives of Shoal, the Australian Space Agency and Asia Pacific Aerospace Consultants Pty Ltd. Congratulations to the contributing authors, including Shena Howell, Shaun Wilson, Jeremy Margrie, John Wharington and Sam Randell from Shoal; Justin Hill and Adam Clash from the Australian Space Agency; and Bill Barrett, from Asia Pacific Aerospace Consultants. The paper was well received, with several delegates keen to discuss civil space activities in Australia! Graeme Dunk, PhD, will be presenting at the Submarine Institute of Australia's 12th Biennial Conference next month. His presentation is titled 'The role of industry in supporting deterrence', and discusses the relationships between Australian policy, geostrategic circumstances and National Defence Strategy, along with the role and potential of Australian industry. Graeme is a long-term commentator and researcher on Australian defence industry and has also been invited to facilitate a panel discussion on 'The capability and capacity in the domestic industrial base is a fundamental aspect of deterrence'. The conference will be held in Canberra from the 4th to the 6th of November 2024. This year's conference theme is 'Australian submarines - Cornerstone of Deterrence'. https://lnkd.in/gzrb9FZ #systemsthinking #defence #australianindustry #submarines

The 2024 Travel to Work Cup starts today at Shoal Group Pty Ltd! For the next two weeks, Shoalers will be making a considered choice to ride, walk, catch public transport or rideshare to work. For each kilometer we travel, we'll earn points for our team. The team with the highest points at the end of the two weeks will earn a $200 donation for their chosen charity. This is just one of the initiatives we have to raise awareness of how our choices can reduce carbon emissions and, in a small way, live our purpose to 'apply systems thinking to bring about positive change'. #sustainability #carbonemissions #ridetowork #lifeintheshoal #systemsthinking #culture #values

We had the pleasure of welcoming Mark and Molly from Adelaide Film Works to our office in #Adelaide today. They brought their cameras and creativity to capture the essence of our team. From showcasing our workspace to filming our team in action (complete with stylish Shoal polos), it was great to apply our skills in another genre! Some of us even took on starring roles—future talent in the making! The shoot is part of the lead-up to the Defence Teaming Centre Skilling Award, where Shoal Group Pty Ltd is honoured to be one of three finalists. The final cut will premiere at the DTC Defence Industry Dinner & Awards Ceremony in December, and we can’t wait to see the results on the big screen! Thanks to the Award Sponsor TAFE SA and congratulations to the other finalists in the Skilling Award Category, Para Bellum Solutions and Ascent Pty Ltd. Thanks to Danielle Tinker, Adelaide Film Works, for arranging the day with us. Big thanks to the Shoal team (or we should say ‘talent’?). You may be able to spot Ashok Samalam, Henry Bennison, Matthew Wylie, Kristen Coles and Michael James Polymiadis in this sneak peak, behind the scenes from the shoot. #defenceindustry #teaming #skilling #innovation #celebrate #awards

Work was undertaken at Shoal Group Pty Ltd to investigate and develop maturity metrics to increase understanding of the maturity of Model-Based Systems Engineering models that are built on Shoal and Shoal client projects. Maturity metrics are an important engineering tool that can collectively serve as a leading indicator for project performance. A paper about this investigation was co-authored by Dr Brett Morris and Derek Rogers and accepted to present at the Systems Engineering Society of Australia #SESA2024 conference, held earlier this week. Congratulations to co-authors and presenter, Matthew Wylie. https://lnkd.in/gMaFzicz #MBSE #systemsengineering #systemsthinking Engineers Australia
