January 9th has been declared a national day of mourning for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29th. Jimmy Carter’s groundbreaking work in mental health advocacy—both while president and after his term—set a new standard for prioritizing care, emphasizing community-based services and critical reforms. His legacy continues to shape a more compassionate and accessible mental health system. As we carry out our work at The Connecticut Women's Consortium, we remember his dedication and are inspired by his example in advancing care and advocating for systemic change.

The Power of Advocacy in Mental Health Advocacy is a powerful tool in the fight for better mental health care and awareness. Why does it really matter? 1. Raising Awareness: Advocacy helps shine a light on mental health issues, breaking down stigma and encouraging open conversations. 2. Influencing Policy: Through advocacy, individuals and organisations can influence policymakers to enact laws and regulations that improve mental health services and protect those with mental health conditions. 3. Empowering Communities: Advocacy efforts empower communities to take action, whether through local initiatives, support groups, or public campaigns, creating a ripple effect that benefits everyone. 4. Driving Change: Persistent advocacy can lead to systemic changes in how mental health is perceived, funded, and treated, ensuring that mental health care is accessible and equitable for all. By advocating for mental health, we can create a society where mental well-being is a priority, and everyone has access to the care they need.

In mental health research, trust isn't a data point—it's a relationship we build, conversation by conversation, partnership by partnership. At The STARR Coalition, 2024 was about breaking down the barriers created by stigma and distrust by working to build relationships between research sites and the communities that they serve. Looking ahead to 2025, our mission is clear: expand The STARR Coalition's impact by creating more bridges between clinical research, advocacy, and treatment communities. To everyone fighting to make mental healthcare more transparent, more inclusive, and more human: your work matters. Let's keep building trust, one conversation at a time. 💚
