For 12 years Matthew Bluette, has been teaching the Pre-College CityLab Intensive Experience program at The Boston Architectural College. CityLab, offered twice each year for all incoming BAC students, is a four-day required course designed to help students explore and understand the systems, structures, people, and places that make up our communities. This year, Matt invited Doug Carr to speak with the BAC students that were participating in the program. As the theme for that day was development along the water in East Boston, Doug was able to share information about the CUBE 3 project The Mark East Boston, highlighting the property’s coastal resiliency and the dynamics of creating a large new housing project in a long-established Boston neighborhood. https://lnkd.in/eMEPThcD

In this article for the American Planning Association, Patty Folan encourages people to consider the local market and see whether zoning reform, phased development, or pop-ups can make implementing transit-oriented development a reality. Folan is a visiting associate professor of landscape architecture in the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas. Each academic year brings about changes in higher education, and innovative, science-based design features play a crucial role in enhancing the learning environment for college students. Understanding these higher education design trends is vital for architects who are creating the educational spaces that foster collaboration, creativity, and well-being. In our newest blog, Dean Dalvit breaks down the trends he’s seeing in the space, from biophilic design to sustainable and healthy buildings. Join us on Monday, November 4 for Architecture and Activism: Axel Timm. The practice of our collective raumlaborberlin refers very much to Lefebvre´s quote “Space is a product of (social) interaction." Thus our approach to the city and towards architecture is not the built space or the building of space in particular but rather the conception, the perception – the inhabiting of it. Within our approach with a focus on public or semi public space - we work at the intersection of architecture, city planning, art and urban intervention. In our work we address the city and urban renewal as a process connected to preferably all users of those spaces. For more event information: https://myumi.ch/egqGn

Curious about what makes an environment "responsive"? This interdisciplinary manifesto dives deep into the intersection of design, technology, and human experience. Authored by leading experts and professionals Allen Sayegh, Stefano Andreani and Matteo Kalchschmidt, Responsive Environments explores speculative urban visions and innovative design projects across different contexts and scales—from interactive artifacts to augmented cities. Drawing on years of research at the REAL Lab at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and featuring work by INVIVIA and other trailblazing practices, this book reveals the experiential layers of our tech-mediated relationship with space. A must-read for those interested in architecture, urbanism, design, and art! Make sure to grab your copy today at https://lnkd.in/d_uvzGpR. This book is also available in e-version.

In the evolving discourse of urbanism, the rise of near-synonyms in architecture, urban planning, and urban design has sparked scholarly debate. While this linguistic diversity can enrich our understanding, it often leads to confusion and imprecision, impacting the clarity of academic communication. It’s time to untangle these synonymous terms, ensuring each one contributes meaningfully to advancing the field. Excited to share that our new manuscript, 'Navigating the Semantic Maze: Exploring Near-Synonyms in the Theoretical Discourse on Urbanism,' is now out! Access one of the free 50 copies here: https://lnkd.in/dvN4KyRE Looking forward to your thoughts and feedback as we continue to push the boundaries of urban studies!
