I'm pleased to highlight a significant paper co-authored by Derck Koolen and other distinguished industry experts on the transition towards low-carbon manufacturing in the European iron and steel industry. This research is vital for achieving the EU's 2050 climate goals and emphasizes the role of hydrogen electrification in steel production. The study presents scenarios assessing the impact of decarbonizing the iron and steel industry on CO2 emissions, energy generation mix, and economic factors by 2030. Key findings include a potential 25% reduction in direct CO2 emissions and an increase in demand for electricity and hydrogen, emphasizing the need for renewable energy expansion. This work is crucial for the future of sustainable industrial practices and energy innovation. As the director of Chain Reaction Innovations (CRI), the entrepreneurship program at Argonne National Laboratory, I am proud that Argonne is joining more than 70 partners in the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2) to help usher in a new, clean-hydrogen economy. Friday's announcement by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is just another example of the pivotal leaps we're taking to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 - https://bit.ly/3S4NEIz Over a quarter of the CO2 emissions in the U.S. come from sectors that are hard to electrify, such as heavy-duty transportation, aviation, agriculture, steel, and oil refining. MachH2 is focused on reducing emissions from these sectors using hydrogen. This is especially important to me because I deeply believe that startups have a critical role to play in this pursuit and CRI can help. DOE's regional clean hydrogen hubs will be responsible for creating a national clean-hydrogen network that supports communities by providing clean-energy investments and improved energy security. The MachH2 hub alone anticipates creating more than 13,000 well-paying jobs. Join me in celebrating this announcement for Argonne and our nation.

As an Argonne scientist who’s been working in the area of hydrogen and fuel cells for over 20 years, I am proud that Argonne is joining more than 70 partners in the @Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen (MachH2) to help usher in a new, clean-hydrogen economy. Friday's announcement by the @Department of Energy is just another example of the pivotal leaps we're taking to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.   Over a quarter of the CO2 emissions in the U.S. come from sectors that are hard to electrify, such as heavy-duty transportation, aviation, agriculture, steel, and oil refining. MachH2 is focused on reducing emissions from these sectors using hydrogen.   This is especially important to me because  I recently became a grandfather, and hydrogen will play a crucial role in helping the US and the world reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, limiting global warming and leaving a better world for our grandchildren.   DOE's regional clean hydrogen hubs will be responsible for creating a national clean-hydrogen network that supports communities by providing clean-energy investments and improved energy security. New steps towards Malmö’s future carbon dioxide infrastructure 🌱⚓ CMP, E.ON Sverige, Nordion Energi, Sysav and Uniper have signed a partnership agreement for the development of a CO2 hub in Malmö. The collaboration is part of the regional project Carbon Network South Sweden, CNetSS, and will carry out feasibility studies to investigate the conditions for an intermediate storage facility in Norra Hamnen. 🤝 “The port in Malmö plays a vital role in establishing the future carbon dioxide infrastructure. The framework of the partnership agreement, aimed at having an intermediate storage facility on site, creates new business opportunities for the port going forward. Now, with customers and partners, we are moving from words to action and taking concrete measures for a long-term contribution to the green shift,” says Barbara Scheel Agersnap, CEO, Copenhagen Malmö Port.
