As I work with companies on ensuring clinical trials represent the real world there is well-meaning intention to provide unconscious bias training to sites staff as was recommended in the June 2024 FDA Guidance. However, does this training make real impact? For the most part, I doubt it. One of the things arising from the session where I was speaking today was the potential for archival education better to prepare archivists to deal with the diversity in our collections. However an issue that came up repeatedly today was the "chilling effect" of pushback against Diversity (let alone, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) work in some jurisdictions (directly by law or negative press). Gayle O'Hara and Talea Anderson helpfully underlined that issues with archival description of disability are not just the language of the original record (e.g. defective) - but also the far from neutral framing of past archivists (e.g "affliction"). Ana Margarida Dias Da Silva spoke about the erasure of women's contribution arising from the practice of using initials rather than forenames - and work that has begun to link botanical and zoological specimens back to those who had actually collected them. I also spoke about challenging the default assumption about who is in our collections (including women as, say, designers and fight directors) - and making the effort to point to the diversity of the early modern past (including disabled people having not just been in the audience but writing and performing).
Having 'just got back' from one conference, I have been starting to turn my attention to the next: 07-09 October in Glasgow. In day 1 Session 2, I will join Gayle O'Hara and Talea Anderson, and Ana Margarida Dias da Silva, for a session on Revisiting Description and Opening Up Archives. Gayle and Talea will join me in discussing disability. I will join Ana Margarida in talking about the discoverability of women. 📢 ETC Supports #CulturalDealEU Statement on Election of EU Parliament CULT Committee Chair ETC is mobilising with major European cultural networks across the continent to lobby for culture and education in Europe based on democratic principles and values, promoting diversity and inclusion in an open society. ETC is alarmed that the intrinsic role of culture and education is being left to extreme, anti-European groups. We know how autocratic governments instrumentalise culture and education to convey their messages. It is for this reason we support the statement by Culture Action Europe, Europa Nostra, and the European Cultural Foundation, calling for culture to be given the highest priority by the European Union institutions. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to work once again with Intercultural Youth Scotland on a short-term project. In my role as a Young People Lead, I played a key part in developing recommendations for the future Anti-Racism Observatory for Scotland (AROS). This project focused on ensuring that AROS effectively engages young people and communities as it moves forward. After initial discussions with the other four Leads, I co-facilitated a focus group where I guided conversations on crucial topics such as youth engagement strategies, inclusive hiring practices, and accountability mechanisms. The insights we gathered will be consolidated into a recommendation letter, to guide AROS in meaningfully embedding young people within its anti-racist framework. I am excited to see how this work will shape the final design of AROS. It serves, once again, as a powerful reminder of the importance of involving young people in co-creating structures that can drive meaningful change and hold the government and other bodies to account. For such structures to be truly effective, they must meet young people where we are, responding to our interests and needs. It’s not enough for our voices to simply be heard — such an approach is not only tokenistic but also harmful. To do nothing with our lived expertise that we share (often rooted in difficult personal experiences), is to invalidate our contributions and perpetuate the very systems of neglect that we are trying to challenge. Instead, young people’s input must be genuinely listened to and fully embedded into policy and practice.
