I was pleased to see that I am not alone when reading the outcomes of this year's Holiday Shopping Survey. It turns out that 60% of us have no idea where to start with gift shopping and 2 in 3 feel overwhelmed by too many choices. Perhaps we shouldn't be surprised that last minute gift cards remain a popular choice! 🤷♀️ What can retailers do this holiday season to win over stressed out and budget conscious shoppers? 💡 3 key take-aways: 💰 Shoppers are cautiously optimistic with the average budget rising to $613 this year (a 4% y-o-y increase) but intelligent promotions will matter for deal-hunting consumers with 1 in 3 shopping as and when they are offered discounts and promotions. 🔎 Growing instances of buyers’ block will lead to more abandoned carts. The question is, how can retailers stop it? The answer lies in inspiring and guiding consumers. 93% of consumers agree that AI could help them find better gifts, and 88% even trust its recommendations. 🎁 Despite their popularity, gift cards have downsides. FUN FACT FRIDAY! I'm reaching way back to my retail days as I think about the upcoming peak season. Being in the logistics industry, we all thinking about Black Friday/Cyber Monday and the initial rush of purchases that are bound to flow in that day, but there is another day that always seems to fall neglected through the season. I spent almost 10 years working in a mall. a few of those as an assistant, a few more as a store manager, and even a brief stint as a senior store manager. The preparation of Black Friday was always big, between stocking the stores and staffing for proper coverage and making sure my customers and employees were happy and satisfied at the end of the day. BUT. The day that I needed the MOST coverage and I needed my staff and coworkers to be the most engaged was December 26th. It rivaled Black Friday, even with less hours open and there were two big reasons: A) Returns/Exchanges B) Gift Cards For these two reasons, it seemed as if the general public flooded us that day. Chances are, if you are in ecommerce, your site traffic is also elevated that day, so you want to make sure all your ducks are in a row to leave a good lasting impression that keeps customers coming back. If you have put a returns portal on the back burner, you are going to waste labor processing requests that day and even worse, your probably going to lose repeat business. If you haven't prepared your stock to support the sale of gift cards through the season, you are going to leave future dollars on the table. I'm a free agent right now, so no product to pitch, but I still wanted to bring my thoughts about the upcoming peak season to the table. Your success lies in your own decisions.
