Exploring preclinical ophthalmology research: Your FAQs Answered! (Episode 2)🎬 Decoding ERG (Electroretinogram) Tests: ERG records retinal photoreceptor responses to light, analyzing a-wave (photoreceptors) and b-wave (Müller/bipolar cells) amplitudes. Researchers developed a responsive Nd-MOF nanorod-based near-infrared cytosensor for real-time monitoring of HClO released from cells and tumors. The Nd-MOF nanorods, with SCy7 as a ligand, served as a photoactive material in a near-infrared photoelectrochemical cytosensor for MCF-7 cells, demonstrating a linear response. The cytosensor also monitored endogenous HClO released from stimulated cells, utilizing an aptamer and F127-coated Nd-MOF nanorods for NIR fluorescent imaging of HClO in cells and breast cancer-bearing mice. A new study found evidence that suggested that pegcetacoplan (Syfovre, Apellis Pharmaceuticals) may delay atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors in patients with geography atrophy (GA), reported Dun Jack Fu, PhD. He and colleagues undertook this post hoc analysis of data from 2 phase 3 clinical trials of pegcetacoplan. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) has been the go-to technology to evaluate GA; however, according to the authors, determining the changes in GA progression, based on the Consensus of Atrophy Meetings (CAM) group, requires manual segmentation of OCT volume scans, which is time consuming, labor intensive, and limited by interrater variability. The authors suggested that the process can be stream-lined by using automated image segmentation algorithms. They recently developed a deep-learning based platform that uses CAM-defined OCT features to detect and quantify GA and its components. Read More: https://ow.ly/j0Em50RSp6F

We made a poster presentation at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) 2024 Annual Meeting. The poster, entitled “VECTrans® technology: a powerful delivery approach to significantly enhance efficacy of therapeutic oligonucleotides in retina cells”, outlines a study assessing Vect-Horus’ proprietorial VECTrans® technology. This is based on the specific design and optimization of molecular vectors that, once joined to a payload, enable its delivery to target specific organs in the body. The study showed that these vectors have the potential to improve delivery of medication to the eye. It’s a good demonstration of the technology’s potential, building further on our two recent major licensing agreements, with Novo Nordisk and Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. With thanks to Stéphane Girard, PhD, Ophthalmology Department Manager, and Sebastien Roux, PhD, Neuroscientist, for their work on this. #biotech #vectors #drugdevelopment #breakingbarriers #opthalmology #arvo

🚀Exciting developments from EHA 2024! Dr Hanne Norseth from the Oslo Myeloma Center presented the results of the phase I/II TG01 study. This study explores the safety and efficacy of the TG01/QS-21 vaccine in patients with KRAS or NRAS mutations. While the vaccine was well-tolerated, further evaluation is needed to determine its clinical efficacy. Stay tuned for more updates on this innovative approach in multiple myeloma treatment. The answer to yesterday’s #ClinicalChallenge question is: B. The small molecule pyruvate kinase activator mitapivat was approved in 2022 for people with anemia based on improvements in hemoglobin over 24 weeks. An extension of the original study to 96 weeks demonstrated that mitapivat also reduces iron overload, with significant reduction in liver iron and decrease in inflammatory markers.
