Chief Executive Officer at Business Leadership South Africa (BLSA), Busisiwe Mavuso says leadership and governance are invaluable and critical cogs of ethical and competent institutions: “When you remove ethics in these foundational elements, you allow institutions to rot. When municipalities become dysfunctional, ordinary South Africans are the most affected, it's critical that the Ethical Code was developed at the coalface of governance” | Watch Live: https://ow.ly/ToAb50QJJoc #AntiCorruption #EthicalLocalGov

In my leadership role among students and undergraduates, it's clear that we have a troubling trend. We as younger citizens criticize governance and demand better standards, yet fail to address our own shortcomings. We need to examine our behavior as citizens and young people even as we call for better governance. Rather than simply pointing out the flaws in our leaders, let’s critically analyze our own shortcomings as well. Yes, I agree, our government is bad, and the system is collapsing, but the harm we do to one another as younger citizens is worse. I've witnessed a noticeable decay among younger individuals in various leadership positions, from class representatives to student union members. The decay has eaten deep into every fiber of the society. Dear young Nigerians, it's essential to acknowledge and learn from today's mistakes to lead effectively tomorrow. True change begins with our own self-reflection and decisive action. Nigeria needs change and it must start with me, you! If the leaders of tomorrow do not learn from the errors of today, then, they have no business leading when tomorrow comes. It's time to act!

A Lesson in Leadership: Be the Change-Maker. Yesterday, we had the privilege of touring the GIMPA (Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration) campus in Accra, led by Mr. Erasmus, a dedicated YALI staff member. As we walked through the historic premises, he shared captivating stories that left a lasting impression on me. One story that stood out was about a former president of Ghana (His Excellency John Dramani Mahama), who was the first sitting president to pass away while in office. He is remembered as one of the best leaders Ghana ever had, leaving a legacy of impactful leadership that continues to inspire. Another remarkable story Mr. Erasmus shared was about GIMPA itself. He pointed out a structure that once stood alone on the campus. The institute was on the brink of decline until one man—Professor Adel—stepped in to make a difference. Leaving behind a comfortable life abroad, this professor returned to Ghana when he heard that GIMPA was struggling. He transformed the institute, building the beautiful structures we see today and reviving its reputation. His actions not only saved GIMPA but also set a precedent for excellence and commitment to public service in Ghana. These stories reinforced a powerful lesson: it takes just one person to restructure a system and bring about the change that is desperately needed. One visionary leader, one committed individual, can reshape the future of an institution, a community, or even a nation. The impact of such leadership is profound and far-reaching. As I reflect on these lessons, I am inspired to be that change-maker—to step up, take responsibility, and drive the positive changes needed in my field and beyond. Whether in business, governance, or community service, each of us has the potential to be that one person who makes a lasting difference. Let’s embrace this responsibility and work towards a future where our contributions are felt and remembered for generations to come.
