The 25% Investment by Jim Ratcliffe in Manchester United for Sporting Control is similar to what we recently saw with the Dallas Mavericks. In that instance, Owner Mark Cuban sold 75% of the Dallas Mavericks to the Adelson Family, but retained Sporting Control of the Franchise. In my opinion this is a recent shift. Investors want to diversify and they view Franchise or Club Ownership as an important Asset Class. In the case of United, the Glazers are relinquishing Sporting Control after a decade of underperformance, where they inexplicably failed to employ and empower a Chief Football Officer. Unlike the Glazers, the Adelson’s are choosing not to engage on the Sporting Side from the beginning, in doing so they are entrusting Mark Cuban. The latter in my opinion is a questionable decision but one that I will follow with great interest.

The recent market has shown 2 paths 👇 1. Have an ELITE QB that elevates the talent around him; Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning did that consistently. 2. Have a QB on a low-cost contract surrounded by elite talent; Brock Purdy, Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow got there before signing big contract extensions. In a business decision, when “The Market is the Market”, and following the market doesn’t align with achieving the goal, should a company be forced to conform? 🤷🏽♂️ The line between good and great companies can be knowing when to follow vs when to innovate and create a new market. Who is going to buy the Boston Celtics? The Boston Celtics, who won their 18th NBA finals championship in June, are officially on the market. Valuations have the Celtics being worth around $5 billion, but current Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck thinks that his franchise could be a record sale. The record for the highest sold sports team belongs to the Washington Commanders who were purchased for $6.05 billion in July of 2023. When Grousbeck was asked about breaking the record he said, "I haven’t thought much about [it] going forward, but I am a competitive guy—why not?” The Celtics, coming off an NBA finals championship, have a very good chance at breaking that record. Boston is a large market with a passionate fan base and rich history in winning. A potential knock on the final sale price, are the recent extensions of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Combined, the stars signed for $600 million dollars in guaranteed money. Some might few this as a negative thing, but personally I think this makes the Celtics more appetizing. As a new owner, you don't want to deal with contract negotiations. Walking into the office on day one with two of the hottest stars in the league locked in for the next few years would be very comforting to any new owner. Do I think the Celtics will break the Commanders record? No. Simply because the NFL is a much bigger market. Days go slow, years go fast. ⏳✨ One of my first mentors in business shared this wisdom with me at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, right outside where the Celtics recently celebrated their championship parade, becoming the winningest team in NBA history. 🏀🏆 His name was Bill Walsh—not the historic coach of the San Francisco 49ers, the only other team besides the Patriots that can claim dynasty status. 🏈 Bill Walsh mentored Bill Belichick, who famously said, "I never lost a game, I simply ran out of time." ⏰ Whether it's building a dynasty in a sports franchise or creating your own cash flow dynasty for your family, time is an essential factor. ⏱️💼 But time also means preparation. When Drew Bledsoe was sidelined after a massive hit, despite having one of the largest quarterback franchise contracts in the NFL at that time (cash is trash), Tom Brady was ready and eager to step in—he also had time on his side. 🏅 Do you feel like time is on your side? I like this video. The Bulls were one of the most dominating franchises in sports history for a period of time. I particularly like Dennis Rodman and the role he played on the team. There are three great lessons here: 1. To win you need a combination of the right talent. 2. Every player does not need to be the best in everything, but star players and coaches do need to bring in the right teammates to get the job done. 3. Know what your strengths are and be the best at what you do. This will cement your place on a winning team as long as there is a need.

Very smart analysis Jacob Turner I should send you a few candidates to help them better evaluate their different job offers as well. I've seen too many times candidates go for the bigger base salary, not really looking at much else...even though I've been told by them "I am looking at the whole offer" before accepting the higher base salary. Factors often forgotten are financial stability of the company beyond the high level info, average tenure of employees working there, work/life balance. We work with a great company that doesn't offer huge salaries, but is backed by a $2 Billion FS company across their 350 employees average tenure is 7.2 years!!! They also offer a pension, which is unheard of these days..... Similarly as the Hurley offer situation, face value of their offers are not as flashy but 350 employees who are closing in on a decade of tenure on average are a true testament to their workplace happiness.
