We're proud to recently hold an Equitable Education Forum where we discussed the consequences of school suspensions and showcased our transformative Alternative Suspension program! Our thanks go to Nicolas Greenfield, YMCA Quebec Director of National Program Development for speaking at the forum on the international success of the program, and to all attendees for supporting us in our belief in the power of inspired young people. Did you know that the average age of suspensions in NSW is just 13 years? And tragically, suspensions disproportionately involve young people who are experiencing marginalisation and disadvantage such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, students with disability and those in out of home care. While suspensions provide short-term respite from classroom disruptions, the research shows they are counter-productive leading to far-reaching negative outcomes including: ➡️ Reduced chances of completing education ➡️ Reduced employment opportunities ➡️ Increased risk of incarceration The Y's Alternative Suspension program, which comes with more than two decades of international experience, transforms time away from school into a positive experience, fostering personal development, social skills, community respect and more to set students on a path back into education and lifelong success. 💻 www.ymcansw.org.au The Y Australia The YMCAs of Quebec #theY #theYNSW #YMCA #EquitableEducationForum #AlternativeSuspension

We need any incoming government to commit to a minimum four-hour arts entitlement within the school week. All children and young people should be able to benefit from the learning, personal and social development made possible by arts subjects and experiences. The Center for Educational Improvement partnered with the National Indian Education Association to develop a Whole Child Framework that represents the needs, preferences, and concerns of Native people. The report details the experiences of Native leaders, families, and community members from over 500 tribal communities across the US. The findings include promising practices, educational sovereignty, state/regional initiatives, compassionate healing practices, unique tribal concerns/practices, and the need for resources, research financing, and policies.
