Safeguarding Critical Infrastructure | Former Royal Marine Commando | International Dolphin Trainer 🐬

I’m often asked why a career in Cyber Security? How did I get from Royal Marine to protecting Operational Technology? In the military, it was range-work, fieldcraft, rope climbing, yomping, cold weather warfare, mountain training, operations, surviving on rations and living in mess decks on navy ships.  So what… It's the in-between skills you can learn along the way that can really help your future career. For me, it was leading teams, dealing with uncertainty, teamwork, overcoming challenges, planning, CIS networks, crypto, information assurance, auditing, briefings and report writing. Although I could never have imagined a career in Cyber at the start of my military journey. It made sense to join a specialist Cyber company that values the very best technical skills alongside strong values and skills forged in the military. Can you tell, I’m a big believer in veterans. #veterans #cyber #icssecurity #trust

So pleased the journey into cyber has been a good one Dane. Working with many former Royal Marines during my industry career I can attest to the transferability of skills and, perhaps more importantly, behaviours that become highly valuable in business. Not always an easy transition but the very essence of commitment and determination certainly helps!

"yomping, cold weather warfare" ..... thought you were describing my commute into work. Also, the picture reminds me of the morning briefing session at many a Security Operations Centre, prepping the analysts to protect the company assets .

TIL the term "yomping" is equivalent to "rucking".

Great post Dane, and all so very very true. Also a top descriptor of the behaviours, skills and abilities service leavers bring into the industrial community in bergan-loads if you’ll forgive the language knitting there.
