BBC Keeps Snooker Free-to-Air
The BBC has secured a five-year extension to broadcast snooker's Triple Crown events—the UK Championship, The Masters, and the World Snooker Championship—until 2032.
This deal ensures that these iconic tournaments remain free-to-air, maintaining their accessibility to a broad audience. In 2024, the BBC's coverage of these events attracted over 33.9 million streams on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website, with more than 16 million viewers tuning in on TV.
While the BBC's extended snooker coverage highlights the enduring value of traditional broadcasting partnerships, some critics argue that the broadcaster's focus on traditional sports like snooker may limit the exposure of emerging sports, potentially hindering their growth and diversity.
Nonetheless, this move sets a precedent for how sports organisations and broadcasters can collaborate to keep the sport thriving and underscores the importance of securing long-term deals that benefit both the sport and its fans.
