Challenge: How can we rebalance the use of street space to create a pleasant environment for walking, playing, talking, and the possibility to enjoin a safe, fresh, and green atmosphere? ... As we prepare for an upcoming workshop in Vila Real, we conducted a site visit to observe the current conditions. First Observation: There are many cars occupying the streets. Second Observation: There is potential for reorganizing the car spaces. This could include changes in overall traffic circulation and adjustments to parking areas. However, there is likely much more we can do. Next Steps: In September, we will delve deeper into these possibilities and explore comprehensive solutions. ... "The Day After House", designed by TAKK, is a groundbreaking renovation of a 1184 sqft apartment in Madrid that re-imagines domestic living in the face of climate change and fossil fuel scarcity. With minimal budget and a strong emphasis on ecology and sustainability, the project challenges traditional architectural norms. A key aspect of this innovative approach is the facade-grade Amorim Cork Insulation used within the millwork and wall-coverings, which serves as sound attenuation, thermal insulation, and a naturally decorative element to the space. https://hubs.la/Q02Tx3tt0

As part of the minor program, ‘(Re)Imagining Port Cities: Understanding Space, Society, and Culture,’ at TUDelft, I recently presented a proposal for the redevelopment of the former Galileïstraat Power Station site, a coal-fired power plant built in the 1930s. Central to this development is the reconstruction of the original power plant in its characteristic 1930s architectural style, repurposed for a new mixed-use function. The redeveloped site would provide spaces for residences, workshops, retail, and cultural facilities. A key feature of this mixed-use space is the area directly surrounding the large structure, which would serve as the ‘plinth,’ ensuring accessibility to the different areas within the building. The proximity of gastronomy and retail spaces to residential spaces would enhance the social safety of the area at night. The proposal also includes a plaza that extends across Galileïstraat onto a vacant lot between two large warehouses. This design allows the public space to connect to the waterfront, creating a link between the neighbourhood and the newly created social space by the water. # 470 URBANISM, Switzerland Industrial revival. When I walk through places like MFO-Park in Zurich, I see the untapped potential of disused industrial spaces. These are not mere relics of the past but opportunities to create something extraordinary: cultural hubs, green spaces, or multifunctional areas that redefine urban identity. A prime example is MFO-Park, developed several years ago on the site of the former Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon (MFO). Today, this space stands as a public architectural oasis, merging innovation with historical significance. At its core is a steel lattice atrium with double walls, open on three sides and draped in climbing plants, complemented by a rooftop terrace offering panoramic views of the surrounding urban development. Designed to host cultural events and performances, the park is more than a showcase of architectural excellence—it’s a testament to the transformative power of regeneration. By repurposing industrial heritage, MFO-Park generates economic, social, and cultural value, positioning itself as a dynamic asset for the city’s future. 🙌 What’s your take? The Sky Mile Tower is an ambitious architectural endeavor envisioned as a towering marvel reaching a staggering height of 1,700 meters (5,577 feet), poised to redefine Tokyo's skyline and urban landscape. Designed as the centerpiece of the Next Tokyo 2045 initiative, this skyscraper is the brainchild of Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates and Leslie E. Robertson Associates. Situated on reclaimed land in Tokyo Bay, the tower is intended to accommodate a population of approximately 55,000 residents, embodying a vision of sustainable urban living on a monumental scale. While the project's webpage has been removed from KPF's website as of April 22, 2023, its presence on Leslie E. Robertson Associates' site indicates ongoing interest and potential. With its futuristic design and potential to transform Tokyo's waterfront, the Sky Mile Tower represents an audacious fusion of architectural innovation and urban planning, poised to captivate imaginations and shape the city's future skyline. It is quite recently that a decent, safe, comfortable and attractive walkable streets are not only desired, but also essential for a 'relational city' (Sonia Lavadinho). Good streets form the backbone of our urban living enviroment. ... Here an example of a bot more than a decade ago where everything went wrong ... no 'trottoir'on the right side, a street space designed for cars (driving and parking), an evidence of 'formula one' behavior, an a wide urban landscape that is planned around a car based mobility. ... The challenge is now to image how to improve these spaces. To start is would be good to get out some asphalt and turn it into space for walking and nature. That should be a beginning. ... The push for "Green buildings" is stronger in today's climate-conscious world. Here is a case of a nearly 30-year-old building that still stands as a real model for green/sustainable construction. "ACROS Fukuoka": a unique building in Fukuoka, Japan. It's a concert hall, but it's also a massive green space! Here's the story: - What was the Problem: Fukuoka needed a new government building, but the only space available was a beloved park in the city center. People were understandably upset at the idea of losing their green space. - The Solution: Architect Emilio Ambasz came up with a brilliant idea: build the government offices and give the park back to the people. He designed ACROS Fukuoka with a stepped, terraced roof covered in plants and trees. It's like a mountain of green rising up from the city! - The Result: ACROS Fukuoka opened in 1995 and became a beloved landmark ever since. It provides much-needed green space in the city center, while also housing a concert hall, museum, conference facilities, and more. Finally, just 3 interesting facts about ACROS Fukuoka: 1. It's a "green roof" pioneer: The building's stepped garden design was innovative for its time and helped popularize the idea of green roofs in urban areas. 2. It's home to over 35,000 plants: The terraces are covered with a variety of plants, creating a beautiful and diverse ecosystem. 3. It's a popular tourist destination: People from all over the world come to see ACROS Fukuoka's unique architecture and enjoy its peaceful green space. Isn't that a real #SuccessStory? ✨ Our Design Guidance for Public Spaces is OUT ✨ 🌳 According to UN-Habitat research, well-functioning cities have around 50% of their surface area dedicated to public space. Public spaces such as sidewalks, streets, playgrounds, gardens, plazas, marketplaces, squares, parks, and waterfronts are areas for social interaction, economic exchange, cultural expression and building climate resilience. Yet often, the multifunctional potential of public spaces is not well reflected in their design. ✏️ Prepared by C40 Cities, this guidance aims to support cities to improve the provision and quality of their public spaces. Inside, you can find common design principles, multiple practical actions and inspiring case studies from around the world. ➡️ Link to access: https://lnkd.in/dUnS8q-v 🔗 Download the document to able to click and access the hyperlinks and extra sources Helene Chartier Camille Tallon Michael O'Neill Costanza De Stefani Priyanka Premlal Ellie White Emma Goddard Isabelle Ward alice kaumba Stephanie Patterson Benedetta Camerini
