A really momentous day for our seabirds and marine wildlife.
Long-term, often attritional, work is sometimes seen as unsexy, or perhaps even boring, but its vital in bringing about long term policy change. Yes we also need to be fleet of foot to jump on opportunities, but today's decision simply doesn't happen without the decades of work that sits behind it. The pushing a boulder up a hill metaphor is very apt. It often takes years (decades!) of edging things forwards inch by inch, before we can take the big leap.
Policy work is so often about making things less bad, stopping the worst, tweaking things here and there. And even when we do get positive progress, its almost always qualified and often hard to tell how much we really altered the outcome. This is the absolute exception to that rule. Its as near to an absolute victory as I think I’ve ever seen. An unmitigated win for wildlife.
And we should recognise the role of Government in delivering this. We as a sector are often quick to criticise, often rightly. But its important that we celebrate progress too. Obviously there's more to do for our seabirds, but Ministers and civil servants have made a decision that massively improves things for some of our most globally important bird populations. Thank you!
And finally, I just want to say how proud I am of my RSPB colleagues, past and present, who have brought about this amazing change. We can and do achieve unbelievable things and I’m incredibly proud to work alongside them all. Lots more to do, but for once, lets do that very uncharacteristic thing of passionate people and pause to reflect and celebrate a big win for our oceans.
HUGE NEWS: We are overjoyed to share a monumental victory for conservation! 🎉
After 25 years of relentless advocacy, the RSPB has successfully led the campaign to end industrial sandeel fishing in the English North Sea.
This significant milestone is a testament to the power of collective action and the unwavering dedication of our supporters.
Over 33,000 RSPB supporters responded to the UK Government's consultation, demonstrating overwhelming public support for protecting our seabirds.
Sandeels are a critical food source for species like Puffins, Kittiwakes, and Razorbills, which have faced immense challenges due to climate change, bird flu, and other environmental pressures.
This victory is a crucial step towards safeguarding our seabird populations, but there is still much work to be done. We are committed to continuing our efforts to protect and restore nature in the UK.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us in this journey – your contributions have been instrumental in achieving this landmark success. 🌊💙
