February is LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK. 🌈 #TeamNiB celebrates the LGBTQ+ community’s efforts to create a more just and inclusive society. The 2024 theme celebrates LGBTQ+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today. Individuals living under the “double rainbow” of being LGBTQ+ and neurominorities are an important part of both movements. 🌈 🌈 Did you know... - There are 1.5 million LGBTQ+ people living in the UK as of the 2021 census – the very first time the rainbow community was counted. - ND individuals are statistically more likely than neurotypical people to identify as LGBTQ+. - People who are both LGBTQ+ and ND experience increased mental health challenges and stresses from being part of two (or more) marginalised communities. @stonewall_2 is doing important work on this topic. Key takeaway for corporate DEI programs: Both #Neurodiversity and LGBTQ+ initiatives should make space for members of the other group (and other identities) to support employees in being their authentic selves. If you're part of the LGBTQ+ community on the Internet, you might know a thing or two about fandom! 🌈 This study aimed to better understand LGBTQ+ adolescents and young adults' view of LGBTQ+ representation and community climate in online fandom communities. 🌈 Historically, representation of LGBTQ+ individuals is negative, perpetuating stereotypes, and lack nuance in ways that strengthen heterosexism. Tropes such as “bury your gays” exist in mainstream media, i.e. where LGBTQ+ characters are subjected to death or violence for the sake of a dramatic or shocking plot line. 🌈 Current literature suggests that LGBTQ+ youth online participation allows folks to experience identity-based exploration, development activities, and community building. Fandom acts as a form of counterpublics, a form of space for withdrawal and regrouping for marginalized communities, providing skill buildings for counter activities directed at wider publics, such as LGBTQ+ activism. It's time to step up and make the world a safer place for LGBTQ youth. As someone who has had the privilege of working with and alongside incredible individuals in LGBTQ employee resource groups for over a decade, I'm proud of the progress we've made. But the world has changed, and we still have so much work to do. We’re proud to amplify their voices at a time when legislators are pushing 600+ anti-LBGTQ bills in their states — creating a platform for harmful public discourse to spread.According to our data, these negative attacks are harming LGBTQ young people: 2 in 3 shared with Trevor that hearing about laws banning people from discussing LGBTQ people at school made their mental health a lot worse. Here is more information that shows why we must continue working to improve — and save — young LGBTQ lives: ★41% of LGBTQ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. Transgender, nonbinary, and/or young people of color reported even higher rates. ★Only 38% of LGBTQ young people found their home to be LGBTQ-affirming. ★56% of LGBTQ young people who wanted mental health care in the past year were not able to get it.   This is why we do what we do - young people need to see themselves reflected in the world and the workplace - continue to show up and be visible. https://lnkd.in/g2f5Y75j

Proud to launch my Director of Public Health Report on the last day of LGBT history month about LGBTQ+ health in Croydon. From Question Marks to Understanding- Uncovering the Health and Wellbeing of Our LGBTQ+ community. A video accompanying my report showcases the lives of local people and allies in the LGBTQ+ community, with first-hand accounts of the impact of their experiences. https://lnkd.in/esNeumDq Limited data on the LGBTQ+ community makes it difficult to understand their health and wellbeing needs and the inequalities they face. LGBTQ+ people are more likely than others to feel isolated or lonely. Nationally, one in three LGBTQ+ young people experience mental health difficulties, compared to one in eight in the general population. One in seven LGBTQ+ people avoid treatment for fear of discrimination. There are three key things we can all do to support our LGBTQ+ community. These are to keep questioning our assumptions, actively support their visibility and promote their representation across all areas. #LBGT #publichealth

𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬: Have policies to ensure they’re inclusive of LGBTQ+ families, offering equal benefits and support. This includes parental leave, healthcare, and family events that are welcoming to all. 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Partner with local LGBTQ+ organizations to learn about available resources and support for families within the community. Recently a team member shared how inclusive policies at work allowed them to confidently adopt and raise a child with their same-sex partner. Pride is more than just the festivities and celebrations; it's also a time to honor and celebrate the impact the LGBTQ+ community has made to society and remember the obstacles they have had to overcome and continue to overcome to ensure fair and equal rights for all. However, it's crucial to recognize the challenges many still face. Did you know that LGBTQ+ individuals are at a higher risk for mental health struggles due to stigma, discrimination, and lack of acceptance? Here are some vital statistics to consider: - LGBTQ+ youth are almost 5 times as likely to have attempted suicide compared to heterosexual youth. - 40% of LGBTQ+ adults report considering suicide in the past year. - LGBTQ+ individuals are more than twice as likely as heterosexual men and women to have a mental health disorder in their lifetime. These statistics remind us of the importance of creating safe, supportive environments for everyone. This Pride Month, let's stand together to promote love, acceptance, and inclusivity.
